Underrail is an old school isometric turn-based RPG set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of Underrail as they violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

I want to love Underrail, but I can’t.

One of the biggest issues I have with the game is the combat system and its targeting. On more occasions than I can count I ran into the issue of obstruction of line of sight for the player. Yes, the player, not the player character. You can’t rotate the maps in Underrail, so at times opponents will move behind things so you can’t see them, even though your character still has line of sight to them. On almost every instance of this I was unable to select the opponent as a target while they were out of my line of sight. I would have to move my character around and hope that the opponent would follow so I could again see them and attack them. I have read monsters do not scale. That might be true, but I had instances where I would fight creatures while I was level 2, and it was a hard fight, then encounter the same beast when I was third or fourth level, only to get my butt handed to me, even though I used the same weapons and had better skills. In one case I measured, and I was doing a third the damage I had done the last time I had fought the exact same creature. The way non-humans respawn is another problem. Underrail is a game where you are struggling to earn money and have enough gear to get by. It can be frustrating to be doubling back, trying to figure out what you are doing or leaving to try and farm gear to get past certain areas, only to return and now have to fight your way through a host of critters all over again. It felt like I had finite chances to gain and craft gear, while my opponents were infinite. Finally, there are gaps in story and quests that are infuriating. An early quest involves finding a missing camera. I spent a frustrating amount of time in a maze-like area trying to find it. I eventually read a guide, where I was told that after I went to a certain room I was to go back to the questgiver and tell him about it, even though the game never hinted at such. There is a good game hidden in Underail, somewhere.

Return of the golden RPG-era

Until I discovered Underrail on RPGCodex.net, I had two holy rules: a) I did not play indie-games and 2) I DID NOT play early access (alpha) games. So how did this game manage to break the most sacred pillars to my fragile existence? Simple: it's awesome. It features everything I miss from an RPG-era long gone by: - Isometric, old-school, hardcore, 2D goodness - Tons of satisfying (turn-based) combat, were clever use of skills and abilities can turn the tide of battle - Classless, skill-based character development system with ENDLESS customization ability and replay value: use traps, psi-abilities, stealth, melee/ranged/laser weapons and much more to get ahead - Freedom to explore the dark, dangerous world of Underrail at your own leisure. But be aware: humanity is struggling to survive in this post-apocalyptic nightmare, so don't expect too many hugs - Deep crafting system with tons of options to get new gear In short, if you liked Fallout 1&2, Arcanum or System Shock you basically can't go wrong. So if you are on the fence about getting this masterpiece, and is still reading this far, my advice would be: get it! You won't regret it! And considering the low price and abundant content it's practically a steal. Enjoy. You thieving bastard.

The "Psi rebalance" killed this game

Was an excellent game before author "rebalanced" it by nerfing the Psi system in a completely disastrous way. Granted, there were elements of it which needed a touch, but along with those he completerly removed all the elements which made Psi builds fun to play, and imposed restrictions which both made pure Psi characters not viable, and restricted which branches to specialize for hybrid classes. Before this change, I loved the game, as difficult as it was. Now I feel cheated out of it.

Not for everyone

This game will never be popular in a world where players have the attention span of a squirrell, every dialog has to voiced and answers have to be crearly labeled GOOD or BAD before you can select them. UnderRail is a true RPG experience with tons of choices to make, locations to explore and enemies to kill or sneak by. You are going to make mistakes and you are going to die... a lot. You'll also wonder a lot if you made the right choice. All part of the fun. This game doesn't do all the handholding common in "modern RPGs" so here's my advice for new players: - Play at the lowest difficulty setting. - Create a new save when entering an area. - Quicksave before starting a conversation. - NPCs have personalities and circumstances. Do not expect a junkyard thug and a lone survivalist badass to react the same way to a threatening remark. - Think before you act... or save and load. The game isn't perfect but nearly 7 years after release it's still getting updates and bugfixes more or less regularly, which is more than you can say for most AAA titles with large companies behind them.

For masochistic CRPG fans

Maybe I'm just bad, but I had a tough time with this game; it really made me savescum, try a hundred different approaches to an encounter and also wonder occassionally if I had fucked up my skilling 25 hours earlier. I love it. Of particular joy to me is the overall world and atmosphere, crawling through old caves, subway tunnels or bunkers/vaults and discovering what mysteries lie there is pure joy to me. (The sierra military bunker in Fallout 2 is one of my most favourite locations) The writing is solid and never caught me as much as some other CRPGs, but was still compelling enough to enjoy going through the dialogs, wonder what the different people have to tell and so on. Oh and the dry and/or absurd humour sometimes is just splendid
