I LOVE IT!

THIS game is what I LOVE in an RPG. It has deep mechanics and harsh world to explore, one that really feels different from what you're used to. It also oozes atmosphere. The game WILL kick your ass though, especially in the beginning, so be prepared to save often. The game does rely heavily on combat, more so than most RPGs, so keep that in mind during character creation. You will probably re-roll your character once you get a handle on the mechanics of the game, but that said, the game caters to a wide variety of playstyles, and it will be hard to make a character that is completely useless. Don't be afraid to experiment, you have many tools at your disposal! The game also has a very deep crafting system, but I'll let you discover that for yourself. Suffice it to say that you don't want to skimp on intelligence. Underrail is a passion project, and it shows. BIG TIME! If you like Fallout 1 & 2, this game is your jam.

Great with gatekeeping flaws

There are so many 10/10 experiences in this game. The atmosphere, the plot lines, the combat is deep (but I have to play on easy!) and yet for all that there is good there is still bad. I've put in a lot of hours thinking if it was really worth losing a star for, and I've concluded that Underrail is an incredible game for CRPG lovers. For the new initiates or those with cursory interests, this is not the RPG for you. This is solely, in my opinion due to the huge lack in quality of life features common is RPGs as old as the genre. This game is humongously large, there's caves to get lost in, cool environments to traverse through and interesting zones to conduct strategic combat. Yet it takes forever to get from A to B. There is no speed up or "normal" fast travel. You must search online for the fan made game speed ups or else you will find yourself falling asleep. Not because the game is super boring, sure it gets boring when you're that slow, but because you have played for so long and got so little content in return you want to keep playing. The game is great but it lacks a timeliness to its movement speed. Beyond that, the game is incredibly hard and you will find that online there are countless minmaxers theorizing builds. While interesting, I don't have the time to do so anymore. If you were to play on the regular speed without the fan made speedhacks, your build would only truly be tested about 30-40 minutes in. Maybe less when speedrunning. This is when most experts say you should restart if you can't pass this place easily. That is way too much time investment! In my opinion as a more casual mainstream player who has played a lot of classic RPGs and the new age of CRPGs, Underrail is great but not friendly. You need to work to get something good out of it, and that work shouldn't be needed.

Blue in the face! SCREAMING FRUSTRATION!

Enemy bodies can fall into unclickable places.Your person can randomly go running places you didn't click and get killed.Game mocks players who suffer from bad merchants with a sad frustrated NPC who can't sell anything.Environment graphics are way better than character graphics,which seem like they come from two separate mismatched games.Characters you create don't match their appearance in game.There seem to be different looks,but no way to customize freely.(not clothing)The game suffers from the same problem that StarWars KOTOR2 suffers from in the sense that there IS the option to side with different factions,but the requirements are extremely unclear for some.You can follow strategy guides and do everything you think is the correct choice,but then the game wont even care how much effort you put into making it BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that you wanted to help them,and there will be much friendly back and forth and then they will suddenly decide to kill you for NO REASON and wont let you explain yourself.There are many times you're not allowed to touch anything,but you must click a person.Click in slightly the wrong place and everyone will suddenly murder you without hesitation.No matter how hard I tried,I discover my playthrough is ruined because the game decided to make NPC's decide I did ?SOMETHING? wrong and now they hate me without any indication as to why or any chance to fix it.Imagine investing so many DAYS into a game and then the game says "LOL wow nice effort" *FLUSH*All of this while CONSTANTLY grinding through unfair enemies that kill you on easy mode.FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Near the end of the game I PERSONALLY KILLED THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSING FACTION (Who's name I WILL NOT mention since I don't spoil games), I then went to the OTHER faction (sworn enemies to the one I killed), THEY READ MY MIND to confirm I was really with them,(and I WAS)and then they called me a SPY and MURDERED ME for NO REASON...WHY! WHY!!!? IMMERSION:SHATTERED. EXPERIENCE:RUINED.

Need patience

The game contains lots of combats, especialy under dominating difficulty. At first, it feels challenging. But as time goes by, it becomes tiresome. Early version even had memory leak problem, and frequently crashed.

Absolutely amazing!

The game will offer you countless hours of deep story, character development, atmosphere and much more! The combat is challenging and you'll feel very satisfied after finishing an enemy encounter successfully! Highly recommended!
