Nice newbie friendly point and click

Point and click detective game, set in a Dresden files-like urban fantasy setting. Very light on puzzles, focused on dialog, pretty graphics, very good music, newbie friendly. The outcome is basically a Bioware or Shadowrun game without combat and walking back and forth. UNDECIDED - puzzles are too easy. This makes the game approachable/newbie friendly, but veterans will be disappointed - to hear party banter, you have to stay at the location, even if you are finished there - standard urban fantasy setting, no innovations. This makes it easily approachable, and everyone feels at home from the get go - companions are hit and miss. Some are fun to have around, but unfortunately there are some Bioware-style whiners PRO - pretty graphics - music is awesome - the NY scenes were crafted with love. I think the devs are either locals, or love the city - full voiceover, most are good. (there are a few bad ones) - asking companions to do something feels better than to have a detective special ability which is common in these games (ie. strength boost as cyborg) - companion interactions add a lot to this genre - can be played in short bursts. One case is usually half an hour. - most puzzles can be solved in multiple ways, take the companions you like the most - extras, like cops and locals are memorable. I have seen similar only in VtM: Bloodlines CONTRA - the plot doesn't hold any surprises - the antagonist and her actions are quite low key. Especially since she is a corrupter/knowledge demon - in a few (really, not many) cases the writing is lazy. Dialog options which would make the most sense, and which would make everyone survive are simply not there. For plot reasons :( - puzzles can only be solved in a pre-set order. Ie. you find a doll, but you cannot pick it up until a ghost doesn't tell you lost her doll - there is no pause/rewind option in cutscenes - it is very-very disheartening to find a journal detailing the big bad's plan

If you liked Blackwell...

I liked this as much as the Blackwell series, and did not mind the silent protagonist. The story is really good, the puzzles are not nonsense, and the voice acting is good.

One of my all-time favorite games

I thoroughly enjoyed the, as Dave Gilbert puts it, mid-era Bioware kind of storytelling. Taking a mix of characters on missions makes the world feel deep because the solutions depended on their particular abilities. It is apparent that had I chosen another party member, the solution would have had to be different. The writing is up there on the high Wadjet Eye bar, and together with the flexibility and alternative origin stories, makes the world feel deep and reactive. I enjoyed the narrative, the pacing, and how <spoilers> worked out in a creative way I hadn't expected. The party banter is great and organic, the dialogues feel natural and do a good job at seemlesly incorporating the origin story of choice into them. The choices were hard to make and it was interesting to hear party members reflect on what the protagonist had done. I appreciate there wasn't one option that seemed most correct (looking at 90's RPGs where the longest dialogue option was usually right). Altogether, I got really personally involved as I played and I consider Unavowed one of my all-time favorite games.

Awesome story. Strong performances.

Great story, well-acted. Unavowed hit many of the familiar beats you would want in a point and click adventure game, but none of the puzzles were overly obscure and the nonlinear case-by-case mission structure meant that things never had the chance to stagnate. Each puzzle was tied to the specifric location and flowed logically from the events of the story and the background of the crime being investigated. There was an economy of storytelling that suggested a deep and engaging background without spending too much time having the plater read in-game lore scrolls or listen to expository data dumps. The actual plot was great with several swerves to the narrative that I didnt see coming, even if some of the actual cases ended up feeling like a bit of a Dresden Files rough draft. The game played well. The graphics are not going to take anyone's breath away, but they convey the mood and characters well enough.

Dresden files reloaded

This is a very interesting game. First of all you create your own character's backstory and in time gather a team of individuals with different abilities, some can talk to the dead, others can read destroyed documents, others are well connected in police force etc. You can only have two people with you so it adds to the experience. There are many ways to solve mysteries, there are actual meaningful choices that impact the ending, characters are fantastic and very human with their struggles and personalities. Story It is a very good urban fantasy crime story. After a year of being possesed by a wicked spirit you are on a mission to found out what the hell happened during that year, what did this spirit do and what are his(her?it?) plans. During the game you partake in a series of investigations, you can usually chose where to go and who you are taking with you so it adds to the experience. (I finished this game three times, rare thing in a point&click adventure) Puzzles There are puzzles. Mostly to give you something to do so you will not feel like in telltale game where you are just watching a movie. Puzzles are well integrated and rather simple. Let me put it this way, if Syberia is 7 and Longest Journey is 5 than this game is 3 in terms of difficulty. It may sometimes give you a pause but there is nothing there that cannot be solved with a 10 minute "what would be the logical thing to do". Graphics Amazing, climactic, fantastic, just play it. Music I rarely consider buying a soundtrack from a game...I am seriously considering it now. Overall Let's be honest...point&click adventures got stale, don't get me wrong I love the genre but sometimes I feel like it is hard to add anything new or worthwile to it. Blade runner was one of the few adventures which would warrant multpile playthroughts, and here is the second one. It brings a lot of new ideas to the table and yet in terms of presentation and controls it feels comfortable and known. 10/10.
