This game was clearly made with passion. You can see the proof of this almost everywhere. The 2D environments are colorful and enchanting, gameplay feels smooth and polished, not to mention the absolutely huge and very diversified world in which you can spend many hours just exploring. Treasure Adventure Game casts you in the role of a young boy who lands on an island that is a fragment of what was once a continent, destroyed in the war between a demon and a wizard. You accept quests, travel across the oceans, and generally have a bang-up time of being a little boy in a big world, out there looking for treasure and adventure. Your equipment consists of a hat, a parrot, and a boat that appears whenever you touch water. Combine those with the basic platforming abilities like jumping and crawling that you’re familiar with from every platforming game ever, and you’ve got the basics of a phenomenal romp across a huge world filled with treasure, maps, secrets, danger, and triumph.
The music changes with the environments and day-night cycles, enhancing the feel the game is evoking and making you feel immersed in the world as you travel through it. The game has a retro feel, yes, but you really have to see it for yourself to understand what Treasure Adventure Game brings to the table. Since it’s free, of course, there is simply no reason not to!
Treasure Adventure Game was created by Stephen Orlando. He spent over 2 years of his life developing it. When you see the scope and detail in this game, it’s hard to believe that it was created by just one guy. But it was! So if you like it, head over to his website and break that donate button!
Huge, open, and highly interactive world to explore and a very interesting story to experience.
Very diversified environments with changing weather and NPCs that are not static but living their lives.
Beautiful music, composed by Robert Ellis, that changes with the background and creates a very unique and enchanting mood.

I guess people on GOG aren't used to indie games. This game is a true gem of an indie game. It is exploration at its best. I won't deny that it is obviously building on past advances in the genre (metroidvanias), but it still stands out as one of the better indie titles. The minimalist graphics suit the game perfectly. If you like this minimalist metroidvania, be sure to check out all the indie games by Nifflas.
If you like old-school 8-bit action game, this is just what you want. Be sure to play with a joypad , then you can enjoy a pretty awesome time. Not like recent games, this one won't give you too much hints and tutorial, thus you have to try, and try, and try again. First you'll feel depressed, but when you figure it out, everything makes sense!
Wonderful game. It features great retro graphics and platforming elements normally only found in classic Nintendo games. Fully customizable controls, excellent music, and hidden paths - what more do you want?
Download it, clear your mind, and play. You won't look back.
A Near Masterpiece, Flawed With Fatal Technical Issues
Treasure Adventure Game is a beautiful retro-esque, metroidvania platformer. But the severity of the issues it suffers from leave many players in despair. Depending on your system configuration, issues may include:
- the game starting up, displaying a frozen black or white screen.
- the game starting & allowing you to play just up to receiving the boat, then crashing back to Windows
- severe frame rate issues
- related to frame rate, difficulty or inability to move when wind blows in the opposite direction your ship is traveling
- related to frame rate, certain items not functioning properly, making some puzzles impossible to complete. One example is later in the game, there is a puzzle that requires you to quickly lite 4 torches. The flames you capture in a magic jar will not shoot far enough to light them all if your frame rate is poor.
- related to frame rate, some levels are near if not totally impossible to clear. An example being later in the game, when far down in the Globo Corporation dungeon. There are electrical arcs that you must go through, that span between the ceiling & floor, and turn on & off in intervals. Again if your frame rate is poor, it is nearly if not entirely impossible to pass through these arcs without getting hit. And there are more arcs to navigate than there are points in your life bar.
The author has addressed these issues by recommending players specifically running Windows 7, to set the game to XP compatibility mode. Regardless, even with this, players are still reporting difficulty. And of course those running earlier versions of Windows are out of luck.
After several months since the release of v1.0, & numerous bug reports later, there has been no word from the author if a bug fixed version will ever be released. Has this project been abandoned? The author of this review can only speculate.
In closing, TAG is a wonderful game when it works on your system. However, whether or not it will & to what degree, will be a gamble at best.
This is really a cool game and i love it! Can't stop playing it!
For you guys on WIN 7 play it with compatibility mode, Windows XP! It worked for me! :)
