由Cavedog Entertainment首席设计师Chris Taylor主导开发,《横扫千军》是一款即时策略(RTS)游戏。本作最初于1997年9月30日发售,这款游戏同时也是有史以来第一款拥有3D单位与地形的即时策略游戏。游戏拥有两个扩展包:于1998年4月30日推出的《核心危机》,以及于两个月后的1998年6月30日推出的《战斗策略》。在《横扫千军》推出时,当时游戏的最低电脑配置要求还是奔腾100 MHz处理器以及16MB内存。当然那只是针对1997年的电脑规格的要求,现代的设备早已大大超出当时的推荐配置,但考虑到此版游戏使用了更新后的游戏引擎,我们推荐玩家使用达到至少1 GHz处理器以及512MB内存配置的设备来游玩。
在遥远的未来,一个被称为核心(Core,“集体意识库”的缩写)的中央化人类与人工智能组织统治者全宇宙。凭借核心超乎想象的科技与经济发展,人类已经定居银河系中的绝大多数星球,全宇宙的居民享受着持久的和平与繁荣。但是,一项允许人类意识转移到机器躯体内的革命性科技打破了原有的平衡,这种被称为“复刻”的手段理论上能够赋予人类永恒的生命。当核心宣布法令以“公共安全“为理由强制要求全人类进行“复刻”,由银河系边缘地带的殖民地(旋臂这个名字也来源于此)组成的叛军势力便揭竿而起,旋臂的成员们拒绝放弃自己的身体并加入核心的机器意识。双方展开了一场持续4000年的战争,旋臂方面使用量产型的克隆体来操作战争载具,而核心阵营则通过不断复制嵌入人类意识的微型芯片来操作己方阵营的机器。

The Game is Broken
I played through the first five missions, eager to engage in some nostalgia. Unfortunately I can't continue due to fundamental problems in the program. When the objectives of mission 5 of the Arm side were fulfilled, I got the chime, but the level kept going. Audio is utterly wrecked, the music randomly getting louder and quieter and not changing when needed. The sound and music volumes have somehow ended up linked as well. Overall this is a terrible port and it needs to be fixed.

Legendary granddaddy of the RTS genre
I still remember playing this as a 10 yo in 1998. The stunning 3d graphics, innovative genre-defining gameplay, humongous amount of content (great DLC) and bombastic reactive soundtrack was truelly awesome. Nothing came even close in the next decade. Then Chris Taylor blessed us again in 2007 with Supreme Commander, its spiritual succcesor. Total Annihilaion still holds op pretty well. The graphics do feel dated and the pathfinding is archaic. Since this 28 yo game truelly defined the genre its gameplay/UX still holds op great. Sound design and OST is still 10/10 I do advise players to scale back ingame resolution. 720p works great on my 1440p monitor.

Wish it was in wide screen
Honestly, this deserves the HD treatment of AOE2, SC1 and other greats. First of its kind that put physics into the equation on an RTS. Gameplay is solid. Story is, well, narrator only, but the gameplay -- fantastic. timeless.
