Where's the expansion pack Eagle Watch? and where's Rogue Spear and it's expansion Urban Ops, Black Thorn and Covert Ops? these classic games deserve some recognition here on GOG.
Broken right out of the box. The user has to manually setup dg voodoo to get it working, the sensitivity is insane, and there are broken missions. It's simply not acceptable to sell the game in its current state.
I wish I could say this is the only GOG release where this is an issue, but it's sadly not the case anymore.
This is a classic, probably the second best Rainbow Six game ever made after Rainbow Six Rogue Spear. Let me start by telling you that this game will only work if you take 1 extra minute time to download dgVoodoo2 for free, and copying all their DLL files from its dgVoodoo2 zip file folder MS -> X86 and place it in the GOG.galax -> Games -> Rainbow 6 folder, after that, the game works flawlessly, zero crashes, even supports 3440x1440 which, wow, is great.
The game per-se is hard for new generation players for several reasons, but I am here to help:
1. Gamers that started towards post-2008 Video Gaming will be confused how the mission starts. Just click the arrows all on top and USE the not so perfect pre-set/pre-loaded Mission Plan. Planning your own mission will just get you frustrated and confused.
2. Remember to NOT play this game in Veteran mode, you should try Easy or Medium, Veteran mode you won't make it past the first Mission unless you got your whole team killed, and you will run out of operatives soon enough.
3. Once in the game, do yourself a favor and just change the keyboard layout to the modern version, but the Unit Command keys, (Alpha Go, Bravo Go, Charly Go, Delta Go) you please in Keypad 1,2,3 and 4. Set crouch to C (you will rarely crouch), Reload to R, and Interact with Environment to F.
4. Patience. You will die a lot at first and probably want to give up. DON'T ! This is how games were in the late 80s-to mid 2005ish. After you do beat the mission, the feeling of achievement will be really amazing.
5. Follow the waypoint lines once in mission. The gaming of 1990s loved waypoint lines, or emphasizing a lot on waypoints (nowadays it is oversimplified), follow that, and as soon as the waypoints don't update, you have to start give commands (Alpha Go, Bravo Go etc).
6. Last point, on rare occasion friendly AIs get stuck when for instance escorting hostages out. Just be patient, go in, and push them for a few seconds, problem solved.
Enjoy
The old Rainbow Six games are far better than the new ones according to me. Back in the old days Rainbow Six was not about storming in and shoot like crazy like in CoD or the new Rainbow Six games. No, the atmosphere Is what I remembered the most. The terrorists have taken a group of hostages, you and your team have to rescue them without having any of them killed. Typical Rainbow Six ->
You start outside the building. You can hear the rain falling down on the ground. There are several ways into the house, some more smart than the other. Use your heartbeat sensor to spot which enemies are close by. Take them out with your silencer. Give orders to the other group. Progress and save the hostages totally quiet. This is what Rainbow Six was like before and I will always love it´.
Bug #1: Mouse sensitivity is unusably high by default; I had to edit a registry setting & set the DPI on my mouse way low to get usable aiming
Bug #2: Recurring glitch keeps happening where certain in-game characters do not spawn at all; if they are a hostage or mission-critical target, you get to start all over! This is especially bad in mission #5, where even my team members started disappearing. There's a workaround for this by altering the victory conditions, but at that point all the fun had been drained from the game for me. I
Bug #3: Numerous texture rendering problems in-game; certain walls (usually stuff covered in vines) are intermittently transparent.
Bug #4: Not really a problem with the game itself, but the Eagle Watch expansion is not included (probably because the installer for it is broken on modern Windows versions)
I award two stars because I did get several hours of enjoyment out of it, but after a while the frustration outweighed the fun. I'd say someone who wants a tactical shooting experience is better off picking up the SWAT games, the releases of which can't be buggier than this.
