The game crashed on selecting the EXECUTE command for mission start, on the very first mission, I couldnt really play the game, guess I need to look up something to fix it myself on old forums, if they still exist.
This was one of those games that you remember loving or hating. Loving the fresh take on a more realistic tactical shooting experience or hating the punishing difficulty. This game was definitely great for it's time though. It was the anti-first person shooter. It dared to something new and completely different. For that I must applaud it. Still, I must admit, as far as all the realistic iterations of the Tom Clancy games go (ie Rogue Spear, Ghost Recon etc.) this boasted the most painfully unforgiving difficulty of the group. The biggest problem was the unrealistic response times of the enemy AI. Basically if you made eye contact, you'd be dead. The problem stems from the fact that there is literally no aiming animation. Enemy AI will snap from a relaxed "I don't see anybody who wants to kill me" pose right into shooting your face off in less than a quarter of a second. And did I mention they never miss? Thankfully friendly AI responds in kind. The biggest problem with this game is that it becomes 100% trial and error, especially if you want to make sure that all your squad mates survive because if they don't they're dead and they're not coming back. There is no practical way to go through the game and save everyone with out memorizing enemy spawn locations. For my brother, that was his favorite thing. Personally I preferred Raven Shield (Rainbow Six 3).
Auto-aim in a PC shooter from 1998 (!!!!). Says it all really. If you approach this game as an FPS you will have a bad time because it is the OPPOSITE of realistic, with aimbot enemies and useless body armor. Not to mention, missing weapon models. As a tactical puzzle game however, it is indeed revolutionary, with nothing really coming close except the sequels. The bulk of the fun of the game consists of coming up with a tactical plan that will minimize friendly casualties. Most of the challenge of the game is self-imposed however, even if you get most of your team killed, they will be replaced by an infinite supply of faceless "reserves" à la Cannon Fodder who are no worse than the named characters. Also the planning interface is quite unergonomic, to put it mildly. In short, the "thinking man" will not play this game as a "shooter".
I origionally owned this game on the Sega Dreamcast. Which by the way was an awesome console.
I'll agree that the game can be a bit buggy and that it had its qirks but remember the age of the game and that fact we still complain about the AI in modern fisrt person shooters.
Beyond all that the game was fun and is definate worth the money.
Where to start with this classic game that I used to play and love twelve years ago...
This is the game that got so many people hooked on tactical shooters and the Rainbow Six franchise, yes it is dated, yes it can be frustratingly hard (if you rush eyes closed and play it Rambo-style, you're dead meat for sure) and it requires patience.
If that is too much for you, don't waste your time or your money on this, you'll be better off with the latest installments.
If not and you want to spend some quality time with a gem of a game, buy this game, plan your attack, gear up your team members and go kill some tangos and escort the precious cargo!
