An Outstanding Visual Novel
Expectations are narrow. We think so little of the possibilities of a medium to originally convey an experience that we come up with genres for easy classification. "FPS" is nothing more than Wolfenstein 3D and every clone to follow in its footsteps. Outside of a dozen simplified categories, players don't know how to deal with what they're seeing. "I like Strategy and RPG, but not Puzzle, FPS and Sports." Have I played all games in every category to know that there are no exceptions? No, but my brain is lazy, so I stereotype. The closest mindless match here would be the traditionally Japanese game classification of Visual Novel, where you click a button instead of flicking your finger to turn a page, but when the settings are more appealing, and the soundtrack is far more breathtaking, you have something closer to a movie where events unfold at your own pace. The constant requirement for minimal interaction to advance the story keeps your mind awake and attentive enough that salient details don't get missed, and in To The Moon, there are a lot of details to track. This is a story that's close to a poem. It's a damned good one. Buy it without expectations other than a highly emotional experience, because that's what you're going to get.
