For the price you get a lot of playtime. Comparable products like Hearthstone charge you easily the same price and give you like 1h of gameplay and a few cards. This one offers a lot more entertainment, good written dialogues and nice puzzles. Must buy if you like card games and enjoyed gwent.
So I've finished it. That's more than I can say for W2 or W3 (or 95% of back library)
This is very nearly a lock for 5 stars. I have only 2 reasons for leaving only 4:
1. Resource balance is non-existent. Honestly its so generous that it might as well not be a counter. Then again I collected *everthing*. If your worried about skipping pickups on a play through, don't be.
2. The unexcusably hard boss battle. After 4 days of redoing decks and replaying over and over, I finally cheated (memory editor) just to get it over with. If I had not done so, this review would have been 2 starts at most. Look I know I'm terrible at Gwent online, but if 95% of the game is easy, don't have the final battle be RNG brutal difficult.
There are a couple of non-essential bugged cards. I assume they will get corrected.
Puzzle design and story, top notch. Setting perfect. My complaints are things that should have worked out during play testing and likely will be patched soon (played version 1.0). Anyway no regrets.
This is a bad gwent game, a bad witcher game and a bad standalone game.
The only reason to play this is for goodies in the standalone gwent card game and even then its too much of a time/money investment to really pay off at full price.
Meh:
- slow, somewhat uninteresting story (am in chapter 3 - like 15 hours in and the story can be summoned up with: kingdom got screwed - find help for kingdom)
- The "decisions" you can make in the story are not decisions. You basically just pick whatever is most likely to give you an achievement so you get free stuff for the standalone gwent card game. Some are just stupid (e.g. you want to convince the dwarves to give you their army. Some random dwarf chick comes along and goes - hey btw could you steal this old history book from the archives so i can convince my dad to let me make out with a dwarf that lives with humans? - ehh NO? how about no! Im kind of trying to do something here to win over the dwarf faction? Maybe not steal from their library and piss off their leaders? okay thanks bb
- ended up with a bug that made me lose a story mandatory fight even though i fulfilled the conditions. (Conditions "Kill the dragon" - i killed the dragon with 3 cards left in hand --> defeat). Didnt bother to try again but if thats a thing then its impossible to progress after this.
- not gwent - You barely do anything related to gwent. The ruleset is largely different from actual gwent (both W3 and standalone). Most of the game is "logic puzzles" and "special conditions".
If i want to do logic puzzles ill google logic puzzles ty! The logic puzzles are not particularly fun or interesting. Mostly just simple math problems.
The problem with the "special conditions" scenarios is that the game doesnt tell you what you have to do beforehand AND YOU CANT REARRANGE YOUR DECK WITHOUT QUITTING THE GAME AFTER THE GAME TELLS YOU THE SCENARIO CONDITIONS!
ScenarioExamples: Kill 1 unit - Kill all units of type - Help unit stay alive - Win 3 rounds
From what i've played of this game most of the encounters tend to be "puzzles" pre-set conditions with pre-set cards and 1 round to play them and meet the pre-set condition which ultimately begs the questions of whats the point of a deck if 90 percent of the time you're doing these pre=set tasks, so far there's been very little battles and most of the battles also have pre-set conditions for victory that are very specific. Its a card based battle system without the actual fun of what that should entail, no stragety, just trying your best to do the pre-set challenge that fulfills the pre-set battle conditio for victory
