Having received training from an enigmatic organization known as the Keepers, Garrett leaves the order and goes back to the life of a thief on the streets of the City. Once you enter the underworld you have to deal with all the consequences - you are not the only one out there looking for decent loot. Hide in the shadows of the dark, savage city. Sneak into old ruins, haunted cathedrals and mansions of the rich. Incapacitate your enemies quietly or in an open fight. This unique sneak-em-up game provides you with a range of means to achieve your goal. Remember though - secrecy is your best friend.
THIEF™ GOLD is a first-person perspective stealth game. It was the first game to use light and sound gameplay mechanics – different surfaces cause varying noise (for example carpets are quiet and ceramic tiles are very loud). You can use sound to your advantage - it’s not only your main source of information on how close your enemies are but you can use it to distract them, for example by throwing objects. With unscripted levels, and objectives and paths altered based on difficulty settings, THIEF™ GOLD can give you hours of non-repetitive gameplay.

Foundational but Flawed Experience
Thief pioneered stealth mechanics revolving around light and sound and manipulating them to your needs. Thief is at its best when its allowing you to do this. However, it likes to take detours in to the supernatural with entire levels that see you not being stealthy at all but rather running from or fighting monsters in labyrinths without a good idea of where you are in it. This brings down the experience immensely as it happens more than once. Despite the games dtracting detours, the stealth sections still hold up very well today and feel intuitive. Part of this is due to the audio design. Guards often have noises they make as well as footsteps so even when they are out of line of sight, you still have an idea of where they are. on the other side of that you must also be aware of your noises as different surfaces produce different amounts of noise which is a brilliant touch that even games today don't even touch on. If you can get past the oldness of the game and the parts that are not oriented around sneaking, you'll find an immersive experience with fun voice acting and a decent narrative.

Still My Favorite Game of All Time
Thief is one of the best games that has ever been made. I can still remember when I first bought the game (it used to come in those weird triangle boxes that Eidos shipped their games in). It was like no other game I had ever played. The game rewards you for being stealthy and taking your time. I can't even count how many times I had to replay each level before being able to move on. This game was revolutionary for the time, and in many ways, is still way beyond any stealth game that has come since. The GOLD version of the game adds even more levels to the fun. Seriously, buy this game, you will not be disappointed.

This is the best game ever made.
- Best level design ever seen in any game. They are plausible, as if designed by an architect. They allow a thousand ways to fulfill your tasks. - Excellent gameplay. A few simple gameplay elements that are easy to understand but interact to make the game very complex. - Best sound design ever. - Best storytelling ever. You find notes, you listen to conversations, you read books. The story is told en passant. - Okay, the graphics suck (and even did at the time). But who cares about such things?
