Having received training from an enigmatic organization known as the Keepers, Garrett leaves the order and goes back to the life of a thief on the streets of the City. Once you enter the underworld you have to deal with all the consequences - you are not the only one out there looking for decent loot. Hide in the shadows of the dark, savage city. Sneak into old ruins, haunted cathedrals and mansions of the rich. Incapacitate your enemies quietly or in an open fight. This unique sneak-em-up game provides you with a range of means to achieve your goal. Remember though - secrecy is your best friend.
THIEF™ GOLD is a first-person perspective stealth game. It was the first game to use light and sound gameplay mechanics – different surfaces cause varying noise (for example carpets are quiet and ceramic tiles are very loud). You can use sound to your advantage - it’s not only your main source of information on how close your enemies are but you can use it to distract them, for example by throwing objects. With unscripted levels, and objectives and paths altered based on difficulty settings, THIEF™ GOLD can give you hours of non-repetitive gameplay.

The control is great. The atmosphere is fantastic. But what makes me absolutely love Thief is the fear of getting caught and the thrill of pulling it off. It's difficult initially, but once you learn your way around the complex system of sneaking around and using your various gadgets to your advantage, it becomes massively satisfying to play through a level as stealthily as possible. Have a little patience, and you'll be massively rewarded.
I got this game expecting a stealth game where I was sneaking around guards and what-not. The first level delivered this, and I was very excited. However, on the second level I encountered some zombies... Ok... Haunted mine shaft. I get it. Got past them and then more guards. Fun. However, the third level was all zombies and giant two-legged monsters in tunnels...
Granted, maybe later the game gets better later... But the story-line wasn't enough to push me forward. The monsters took away from the realism which the first level immersed me in. Thankfully I got this game on sale. I would not have paid full price for it.
But, if you enjoy sneaking and you go into this game wanting a fantasy experience, and not a realistic experience, then you might have just found one of your favorite games here.
The mechanics are great and easy to use. The music and sound effects are wonderful. The attention to detail was wonderful as well (despite the graphics being a little dated.) For the time-period the game was released I'm sure it was ground-breaking.
Fun game, but again, just disappointed that they strayed from realism and entered the fantasy world so quickly. I didn't want to sneak around monsters.
Well worth 74p in UK. Great game if you havent already got it. I have an old PC on which I play the original, but not sure how well it plays on win10. Still worth a try at this price
Great stealth game, great world building and lore, clunky movement besides the ahead of its time mantling system. Its great but i prefer The Metal Age as your stealthing around humans and machines more instead of the zombies and wizards in this game.
