Having received training from an enigmatic organization known as the Keepers, Garrett leaves the order and goes back to the life of a thief on the streets of the City. Once you enter the underworld you have to deal with all the consequences - you are not the only one out there looking for decent loot. Hide in the shadows of the dark, savage city. Sneak into old ruins, haunted cathedrals and mansions of the rich. Incapacitate your enemies quietly or in an open fight. This unique sneak-em-up game provides you with a range of means to achieve your goal. Remember though - secrecy is your best friend.
THIEF™ GOLD is a first-person perspective stealth game. It was the first game to use light and sound gameplay mechanics – different surfaces cause varying noise (for example carpets are quiet and ceramic tiles are very loud). You can use sound to your advantage - it’s not only your main source of information on how close your enemies are but you can use it to distract them, for example by throwing objects. With unscripted levels, and objectives and paths altered based on difficulty settings, THIEF™ GOLD can give you hours of non-repetitive gameplay.

In an infusion of atmosphere, stealth, story telling, immersion, and style, what Looking Glass did was truely a masterpiece in the medium of gaming. Has it aged? Yes, of course. But so has Citizen Kain. So has the Beattles. So has the Mona Lisa. There are creations that represent their time, but in such a way as to resonate across the ages. This game is one of those creations.
If you're into stealth games I would check this one out, as the title says this is a solid game. Although, the four stars is just for how old the game is resulting in clunky-ish controls and overall just some small things, but still overall very in-depth for the time. As for graphics you can see the images on the store page, standard fare for games of this time, but trhat means if graphics are very important to you this game is not for you. I would completely recommend this as I said for anyone into stealth, but if you're not very into stealth or just not sure wait for a sale usually around three bucks than this is a must-have and should always be picked up on sale.
I've played Thief 1 and 2 back in the day and had fond memories of the experience - and while Thief 2 is still a brilliant game, re-playing Thief Gold wasn't as much fun as I had hoped for.
The game has some good levels where the stealth core mechanics really shine. You sneak around, avoid guards and traps, pick some pockets and explore interesting and challenging locations, always on the lookout for loot and secrets.
Sadly, for every good level there is also a bad level where you wander around huge maze-like maps and getting through those missions was more tedious work than enjoyable experience for me. Some missions are more dungeon-crawler than stealth game and while those add variety, they somewhat feel out of place.
If you want to play the game for nostalgic reasons and don't mind a bit of frustration go for it. Otherwise start directly with Thief 2 - it retains all good aspects of the first game but has significantly improved level design.
It is the first truly good stealth game with the best quality of sound and music of the time and is still really playable today.
For this price you have to try it. And the Thief Gold HD Mod skillfully takes the graphics to a new level.
While I would usually attribute my love for this game to nostalgia I know this goes deeper than fond memories. The level design is great, the story interesting, the sound design superb and the gameplay tense but fun as it should be for a game about being hunted. The GOG copy is superior to the Steam version out of the box as it comes with TFix installed already which is mandatory to not play the game in a 800x600 window and have it play nice with modern computers.
