Having received training from an enigmatic organization known as the Keepers, Garrett leaves the order and goes back to the life of a thief on the streets of the City. Once you enter the underworld you have to deal with all the consequences - you are not the only one out there looking for decent loot. Hide in the shadows of the dark, savage city. Sneak into old ruins, haunted cathedrals and mansions of the rich. Incapacitate your enemies quietly or in an open fight. This unique sneak-em-up game provides you with a range of means to achieve your goal. Remember though - secrecy is your best friend.
THIEF™ GOLD is a first-person perspective stealth game. It was the first game to use light and sound gameplay mechanics – different surfaces cause varying noise (for example carpets are quiet and ceramic tiles are very loud). You can use sound to your advantage - it’s not only your main source of information on how close your enemies are but you can use it to distract them, for example by throwing objects. With unscripted levels, and objectives and paths altered based on difficulty settings, THIEF™ GOLD can give you hours of non-repetitive gameplay.

I waited for this game to be on gog for years... damn, i joined gog in the very first days hoping to find this game one day or another... it's a classic that everybody should try! nevermind the bad graphics (it was pretty bad even for his time, but then again, the maps are HUGE), this game is all about SOUNDS... about atmosphere, about freaking you out!
Wonderful atmosphere, an intriguing world and the ability to play without killing any living being work together to create one of the true classics.
I like the game so much I named my first-born after the main character!
Everyone is giving this 5 stars? Jeez, you guys have more patience for dealing with zombies than I do. Been a very long time since I played this, but I vividly remember the greatest, most heart pounding and atmospheric game of all time suddenly turning into blundering around in really dark caves try to hack zombies to death. It was so much of a buzzkill I never got around to finishing the game.
I would urge people to buy the sequel instead, which has only a few mildly infuriating (but quite fun to break) steampunk robots, but I suppose it's worthwhile doing this one first for the sake of plot if nothing else. Just don't let yourself get bogged down on the lamer levels... find some maps online if you have to. Thief 2 is essentially the same game but with better levels, including a truly amazing one that takes place entirely on rooftops and periodically through the windows of upper floors. Leave Thief 3 for last; it was hobbled by forced Xbox compatibility.
Wanna own a piece of history? Then get Thief 1 and 2, and play them in order. They may look outdated in terms of graphics, but Thief 1 and 2 revolutionized many aspects of gameplay.
For starters, they introduced stereo surround sound specifically made to help you pinpoint where enemies are without seeing them. Even without surround sound, though, you will still feel the hair on your neck stand up when you're trying to avoid detection and the zombies and hammer haunts are rattling up behind your or just around the corner...especially if the haunts are searching the are where you carelessly made a noise.
The interactivity in this game was on a high level for the time. Master thief Garett could do a lot of things--even swim and dive--whereas many contemporary game heroes were stuck on linear tracks that at most merely tested a player's memory and reflexes. Movement was made to be incredibly smooth, and this combined with the first-person perspective really ramps up the immersion factor--better than many games made to date. He also had plenty of different kinds of tools to help him in his infiltration of spaces, but their supplies are limited, and he has to steal to be able to afford more. Using them sparingly, and knowing when and when not to use them (especially water arrows) is a sign of a veteran Thief player.
I'm not going to tell you about the enemies--they're going to have to be a surprise. While Garrett can fight most of them, he's better off sneaking around enemies or knocking them out. Beware, though--some can't be knocked out, and others can't be killed. Garrett isn't tough enough for protracted battles, especially when their friends show up to help kill him. They don't take turns fighting, either.
Once you've experienced the end of both, do a web search for Through The Looking Glass (TTLG), and play some custom fan missions. You won't be disappointed!
