Great end to the series

I haven't played the new (rebooted) Thief yet, so I can't compare T3 to that one, but as far as the original three parts are concerned I, unlikely other reviewers, enjoyed T3 the most - in spite its downsides. Plus I got it at a GOG sale for such ridiculous bargain price, that my satisfaction was pushed from what would be a 4.5 stars right up to 5. Well, I admit, I didn't love T1&2 that much in the first place. Yes, they were great games, and I wish there were many more Thief-like games, but the surroundings felt somehow too depressive to me. Besides I just hated those damn robots in T2. The Good: * T3 feels more open and free to roam around, thanks to the central hub (city), offering secret places and shortcuts, and you can (repeatedly) rob the houses and passers-by. * Level design with many ways to accomplish the goal. * Diverse levels (The Cradle is REALLY something ELSE.) * You can scale many walls with climbing gloves (though there is NO rope arrow). * Lighting and cast shadows implemented MUCH better. (Alas, your own shadow won't give you away, though the tutorial claims so - wikia.com confirms this.) * Dialogs between guards add much to the feeling. Are informative and at times really hilarious. * Switching first/third person as you wish. * Story. The Bad: * Loading times: saving is fast, loading anything but (!?) * Too easy, even at highest difficulty. Guards pretty stupid. At times you can just run past and they won't notice you. Or will complain, but won't chase you. And when they give a chase, it's quite easy to shake them off. * Noise arrows pretty useless. You can use ANYTHING instead. * Oil flasks even moreso. The Ugly: * The city is broken in small chunks, which makes slow loading even worse. * Alt-Tab doesn't work (!?!) * Glitches: Statues can't hit you when you crouch. At times you suddenly can't jump any more and start gliding around like on rails. You can get stuck in the environment or even wander off the map and must reload... Save often!

Ignore the anti-console crowd

I played the first two games back to back a half decade ago but bounced off the third game in part because it had a bad rap. Yes, there are some differences- but, frankly the don't matter. The little loading screens that break up areas are largely irrelevant. Only time they can be an issue is when someone was chasing you when you exited. The story is good, and has some creepy levels in thief fashion. The game also brings back many enemies and references to the previous games If I had two criticisms of the game I'd say it was too easy, and that loot is annoying to find on some levels. Also expert difficulty has been dumbed down in that it allows you to kill combatants. But that didn't affect the way I played so was still very fun. I was tempted to give this four stars- but, I enjoyed it. I'm glad I played it. And the thief games are some of my favourites ever.

Great game, requires mod to run in 2025

The Dishonored games drew heavy influence from the Thief franchise, and although those are solid, I still think the Thief games (specifically Thief 3) are superior overall. If you like stealth games, you will enjoy Thief 3. I played this game as a kid when it dropped on OG Xbox in 2004 and it's just as good as I remember, however you will NEED to install a third-party mod called "SneakyThief/SneakyTweaker" for it to run properly. They should really officially patch it, but since they haven't, this is the only way to play the game without game-breaking glitches.

Fantastic game.

Read what others say about the game as far as how the multi-platform port affected the game and such. This is a conclusion to the trilogy, with an appropriate ending, funny moments, strange moments, and serious moments. It sticks true to the way Thief tells its story through mission briefings, artistic minimally animated cut-scenes, and lore. It has the same dark atmosphere, mostly same mechanics as 1&2 with some minor and one or two significant changes. Oh, and one of the creepiest levels ever made in a video game! That level alone is worth it. This game has its technical flaws, but I guarantee if you like Thief, you will fully enjoy this game despite its flaws.

The Best

This is what I consider one of the best Thief games, excluding the soon to be released Thief IV. I have played them all many times, but TDS remains my favorite despite it's shortcomings. Yes, there are load times between levels, but there is long load times on the other games in this series. Just not between levels. I didn't find the load time between levels to be that distracting anyway. It was more important to me that the game levels be wickedly fun! There is so much more to love in TDS then in the earlier games as far as humor, graphics, and sheer fun! Don't get me wrong, I love all the Thief games individually, but once you've had the shit scared out of you in "The Cradle", you will never be the same. Free roaming is the best thing that ever happened to the series also. I guess the only downside for me was having to play it on an Xbox, but hell, it wasn't all that bad. I highly recommend this game if you only have time to try one out of the series. Don't get caught up in the fan boy arguments about how this game wasn't up to the level of the earlier games. Try it yourself, and you'll probably find as I did, that it's much better in some respects!
