A Pretty Good Movie
It works fine as a movie, but the combat is crazy slow, exploration feels unsatisfying, and the decisions while technically far reaching aren't real choices. I'll break those down, but overall it's worth playing with around 40 gameplay mods and a few guides to let you know which choices are thought out with hours of cut scenes and which ones result in a 'you died of disentary' style abrupt outcome. Combat and all movement is rough. Every swing or turn you make takes seconds to animate AFTER you press the button. You don't press X to fast swing, you press X to command Geralt to fast swing and then he'll do it after. You dont push your stick right to move right, you push it right, wait for him to turn fully, start his stride and end his stride. Walking through buildings was STILL the largest challenge on Death March. Exploration reminded me of Tera. EVERYTHING is reused. New gear is just the same gear but this one has a gold background. There are maybe 3 faces for each gender and race so every cabin (let alone every town) has identical people, bins, and monsters right next to eachother, even with crowd sizes set lower. I lowered it initially because I saw 5 identical peasants (face, hair, clothes, and all) walking in a row and thought it was a quest or something but then it happened again and again... There are entire buildings with furniture that have been completely recycled without changing a color. The most devistating part was the choices though. Regardless of dialogue choice, be it 'flirty', 'kind', or 'furious', Geralt will growl and grimace at everything he speaks to: murderers, monsters, his daughter, children. The game punishes you if you don't play Geralt as money hungry and unfeeling by making you mean regardless. I feel blessed that I never cared about Triss from previous games because while presented as a romance choice she has about a fifth the content as Yen. Definitely follow a guide!
