I still remember the feeling that the DEMO of this game gave me. The sense of place and atmosphere was one of the thickest and most compelling I remember. After the beginning, playing the first chapter was just a joy. Understanding how all the lore was interconnected with each other was a blast to discover. But what I think really is significant here is that you were forced to go out of your way to be Geralt, you had to gain its respect and the game treated you with respect in exchange. A true classic, it will be long remembered. Some people say the combat system was rubbish, but I really enjoyed it. The need for luring some enemies aside in order to be as effective is used to make some of the most difficult fights possible. The character development and the role playing element in this game is, in my opinion the BEST of the whole series. The choices in the game were greatly advertised but it was for a good reason. When it came out, no many 3D Rpg has ever made choices that influential. True masterpiece! It will be remember along side, Fallout, Warcraft. Diablo, Baldur's Gate and Gothic (probably?) for their innovative ideas and pure hardcore love that the developers put within the game.

There's a lot to argue about "The Witcher", but the fact is that this game is astonishingly replayable even a decade later, and remains one of the most exciting classic role-playing games of our time.

I kmnow when I want to begin with the witcher, I had many problems with the swords because it took so long before I can attack the other one.This is my only critic on this game and i have to play the second, witcher 2. Sorry Iam not the best gamer, maybe it was my fault that I couldnt play the first witcher I dont know . But the others two episodes Ilove so much to play and Iam very proud that this is a polish production. Its so beautiful and amazing to see the whole artwork , to hear the music. I got this game for free, and I know that this isn't a triple A title, so perhaps I should not be too harsh. I got used to the game quick enough, I was worried I would stop because of the severely outdated gameplay mechanics, but don't get me wrong, the gameplay mechanics and especially combat is bad. There's really nothing skillful about combat and I felt playing through the game on easy was a good choice so as to avoid getting frustrated by wonky RNG mechanics and cheap deaths like getting stunned and blinded and just sitting there staring at the screen, not able to do anything while receiving damage from four sources. I read all the books and played the younger games, so for sake of continuity I wanted to play this game as well. The game starts off quite strong in a Kaer Mohren and later a swamp, much like Witcher 3. The atmosphere is actually quite good and it's fun to know the background info that returns later in games 2 and 3. The quests sometimes forces you to make tough decisions, which would increase replayability if I would have actually liked playing the game. There are some fun quests here and there, but DAMN there is just WAY too much running to A - B - A - B, and though that's bad enough, it's made even worse that you have to load every new cell, even things like going upstairs in a house! I felt the plot wasn't too captivating, Salamandra felt out of place in the world of the witcher, and the closer you get to the end, the more ridiculous the enemies become. An entire army of otherworldy mutants just doesn't feel right, and the fact that Salamandra isn't really mentioned in the other games hints that the developers probably shifted their views quite dramatically in how the game games are to be presented. Music is decent, voice acting goes from alright to downright awful. Character models almost look universally ugly and lifeless Play this game if you're REALLY a witcher fan, but on its own I cannot recommend it, as hard as I tried to like it
