Thus begins your adventure within the Realm of Greyhawk. It is an adventure that will lead to the source of a deep and abiding mystery, to the very core of evil itself.
An evil demoness founded a cult dedicated to exploring evil in its most elemental forms. This cult was based in a temple just outside the village of Hommlet in a vile shire known as Nulb. Soon, this cult rose to rule the region with tyranny and grim times of chaos and violence ensued. Hard-fought battles were waged and the war was eventually won by the good armies of nearby lands. The temple was razed, the villains were imprisoned, and order was restored. The temple itself faded into distant memory. Until now...

I love this game. Best D&D computer game ever! But without the Circle of Eight modpack it's practically unplayable. Even with that, there's still a ton of bugs. If you can stomach the technical issues and the steep difficulty curve, you'll have a blast.
Wandering into the wrong areas and getting my level 1 ass handed to me brought a tear to my eye. More RPGs need to be balanced this way.
I'm also a big fan of turn based combat, which is almost impossible to find in RPGs of any stripe these days.
The game is challenging for me, and I don't know if I will push myself to complete it. Of what I have played I really enjoyed the atmosphere and ambience of the game.
I agree with others that say the game feels a bit like an unfinished product that could have used more refinement.
The game is a bit difficult at first but if you let yourself go and turn off the tv it's an absorbing game. Old D&D rules. With CO8 and Temple+ (takes only a couple of minutes to install both) this game really shines. Path finding could be a little better but doesn't really create a problem. And the build options are numerous. Advice: try to make it to level 2 before taking on any of the real baddies. Talk to everybody. Go in the houses to talk. The villagers don't roam very much. Make use of the flag notes. There should be enough quests in the village to get you to level 2 without getting killed. It's a fun, laid back game that doesn't push you towards the main questline like so many games in this genre. Enjoy.
