The gods may be crazy! First the Almighty HE, the highest of all the gods, sends Jupiter, Horus, and Ch’ib-Yu off into an extremely arduous competition simply on account of some occasional drinking sprees! Then the three gods are subjected to scorn and derision: Q'nqura, the goddess of the Amazons, lets the trio win in battle out of pure spite, and then their humiliation is complete!
The Settlers® III: Ultimate Collection is a lavishly designed, strategy-filled civilization simulation where your industrious people construct buildings, produce goods, harvest crops, and conquer new lands in scintillating real-time battles! Will you heed the call of the gods and become their avatar?
I loved this game but when my son broke my cd's of the game I downloaded from GOG but found it's not compatable with Windows 10 which is very disappointing. GOG did refund me to my wallet but I wish I could play the game. There are so few games that interest me so it's a shame when I couldn't play it. GOG please find a patch to fix this and then I can change my rating.
A lot of reviews here indicate that this game does not run or work on Windows 10. This is false, the game does, but there is something you have to do manually and there are several caveats.
Regarding the issues with serial number: You do not need to actually supply said serial number, instead you need to run a script in the Settlers 3 installation folder as an administrator, which is indicated in the FAQ section for this game. Go to your Settlers 3 installation folder (likely "C:\GOG Games\Settlers 3 Ultimate" or something similar), locate the script named "regs.cmd" and right-click, then run as administrator. You will no longer need the serial number and everything should just play.
The multiplayer problem is legitimate, as the license keys are exhausted. That said, local multiplayer still works, so you can work around this problem by using a VPN to connect with who you want to play with, then treat them like they're on your local subnet. This is kind of a lot, and not really worth it for many people, so if you are looking forward to more than local network multiplayer, I recommend not buying this. If you can work with that limitation, the game does run.
I have only played this on Windows 10, I do not know how it will work on Windows 11. The screen resolution is fixed and extremely bad at 800x600. If your monitor doesn't support this resolution, you likely will see nothing at all and need to reboot or force close the application or something. A good workaround is to use DxWnd to render the screen, so you can play on a window rather than fullscreen.
If you can deal with the above, Settlers 3 is still here and it is still very fun to play. I found myself caught in it again while testing.
The game itself is as pleasing as it was about 15 years ago. You need to get used to the very low resolution, though or search for highres mods.
GOG sells the game as running on basically all Windows versions which is a blunt lie. Be prepared for a bit of googling and a visit to the forums to make it run on modern Windows versions (>7). Even on Windows 7 you might have to twist a knob or two to get around the serial prompt at the start.
More importantly, only local multiplayer is possible, since the serial keys on GOG are exhausted. When you ask the support if they can tell when keys will be available again: they can't. You either can get a refund (at least!) or swallow it.
So, bottom line: the game is nice and cheap but you pay a premium with your time to get it running.
And you can not play multiplayer online without the missing serials. I advise you to try getting vintage games from sellers that actually care about people being able to run them properly.
Three stars off - not for the game, but for the dishonest sales methods GOG is using.
I have loved the settlers series with the preference of this single game. However after many years playing the version I bought on here with no issues at all I have finally had to admit defeat as unfortunately it seems it is no longer compatible with windows 10, even when using the compatibility mode.
It is a phenomenally addictive game and one I would recommend to anybody. I'm now into my 30's and I still love this game after nearly 20 years of playing it. Pick it up! Its cheap and you wont regret it!
