The coziest RTS of all time
I remember when young me picked this up back in '98. The first thing that hit me was the graphics, with it's cute, colorful and vibrant art direction. When I finished glaring and started playing I realized that this game, while not a strategic masterpiece, had quite a few things going for it. The town-building and expansion aspect of it is where I had the most fun. Building up my material routes, from wood, to planks, to coal, to iron, to weapons. Discovering metals and coal in the mountains. Trying to keep a steady economy going. All that was an outright delight to plan out, and watch. That little guy with a straw hat strolling about sprinkling and sowing seeds for wheat is pure coziness in action I tells ya. The warm atmosphere, and also ambient sound design, is really up my alley. I also realized that this game had done away with the need to build roads, like in the Settlers II, which took away some strategy but also some headaches for city-planning. The combat part is probably where this game falters most. You control your military units directly this time around, and it can be a real hassle. The pathfinding is adequate at best. Luckily the peasants live their own lives. The AI is not superb, and the game can be quite hard at times on account of you being too slow. I love this game a ton in the end, stumbling combat and all, and I still play it from time to time even to this date. It holds up very well on a graphical and functional side.
