Not Fallout in Space... but So What?
This game was hyped up so much before its release, mostly by the press, as "Fallout in space", and it's easy to see why upon looking at the game's aesthetic and basic gameplay. In fact, there are definitely some things about it that are much like Fallout. After release, however, it was clear that it wasn't really Fallout in space, not that the developers ever really said it was. It never seemed to be their intention to make it out to be that way, only that it was certainly inspired by it. This is one of Obsidian's first forays into a unique IP, untethered by the likes of Star Wars and Fallout, free to create their own world and make their own gameplay. To expect it to be exactly like KotOR 2 or Fallout: New Vegas is frankly silly, and that shouldn't be the expectation one should have on going into this game. Halcyon, the solar system in which the game is set, has some beautiful environments and lovely setpieces. The first area you visit, Emerald Vale, sets the stage for the feel of the entire game, and it does so beautifully. Unlike the folly that was the Peragus II Mining Colony in KotOR 2, Emerald Vale doesn't feel like a slog, and neither does the rest of the game. Alongside that, the characters are wonderful and feel delightfully human. The game is not an open world, but the way the game is designed, it would have only hindered it. The game has a much smaller scale than Fallout, being much closer in scope to KotOR 2, and that's where I think the crux of the problem is for a lot of players. The press overhyped the game, calling it an open world and Fallout in space, and everyone went into it expecting that. But I think the game deserves to be played for what it is. It's not perfect by any means, and there are a lot of things that could be improved by the next entry, but it's extremely promising, and I can't wait to see what Obsidian gives us next, whether it's Avowed or another Outer Worlds game.
