What a charming hack&slash game

I am a bit surprised at the rather negative reviews found here. The wealth of game mechanics, the charming game world and the charismatic duo of protagonists help a lot in looking over the few deficiencies in the combat department. Combat: I admit, the game has weak spots in this area. It can´t compete with the energetic combat from Diablo 3. And the difficulty and damage spikes are for real. But you can adjust difficulty on the fly. The good things: The number of enemies that the game throws at you is impressive. Especially during tower defense quests you face huge hordes while your traps shoot lasers, fireballs and werewolves (yes werewolves). Furthermore, the six available character classes offer very distinct playstyles. Among them is the Umbralist, one of the best interpretations of a stealthy assassin in any actionRPG. Character growth: Your skill tree is very intriguing. There are three circles that are unlocked as you gain levels. Each of your skills branches further into possible modifications for that skill (e.g. add a poison cloud). Then you have a selection of skills that are not connected to the skill tree (called auras). Oh and let´s not forget your lovely ghost companion with her own skill trees and builds. This system achieves something most games can only dream of: it stays relevant and your skill points remain precious up to level 100. Exploration: The Final Cut is a combination of the whole trilogy. The games were moderately short but when stitched together into one campaign, the game becomes massive. It can take up to 50 hours to beat the final boss. The areas in this game are not randomly generated and generally look very pretty and distinct. The excellent music plays also an important role in making your stay enjoyable. I just wish Van Helsing would run a bit faster. Nice game, bad login system

The game is very nice. There are lots of easter eggs which I found very funny. There is also a kind of "old couple" relation between Katarina and Van Helsing which is quite funny. There are many options to build up characters, nice additional stuff to standard H&S (Chimera, Missions for general. Well those 2 boils down to some clicks, but I see it as a plus). From time to time you get to play a tower defense minigame which is quite fun (it is not mandatory, you can send your soldiers, but I personnally found this quite fun). The problem is ... with their login system. You can play off line, that is ok. But if you want the adventure mode, you have to play online (you can't use an offline character for this, so it must be a truly online character from start to end). Long (Un)Live Dead Lady Katarina!

(Disclosure: You don't give a bad review to a game you've spent 1600 hours with.) The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut is an ARPG set in steampunk fantasy environment. If you like your ARPGs just dark and serious, you probably won't like it. Otherwise, you might be in for a blast. I certainly had one. Your character - son of the Van Helsing character of Dracula fame - and his ghost companion, the ever-sarcastic lady Katarina, come to Borgovia, answering a call for help. And so starts a long and winding B-movie-esque story that will take you through a vast amount of diverse locations, from woods and mountains to a city and the otherworld called the Ink, all populated by lots of different monsters. Graphically, the game is very nice, and the music is even better, featuring many strong themes. What I liked best was the playability and its versatility. 6 classes, difficulty gamut from real easy to real hard with the option of permadeath, nice learning curve and varying pace and dynamics of the missions kept me entertained throughout the game. When you spend ages with a game, you also get to know its less rosy sides. There are surprisingly few of them. One game-breaking bug (don't ever lure/kill general Breda out of his arena!), some areas near the end are less inspired, there are a few bugs in the crafting system (one can be exploited to get an infinite supply of epic items and money)... Neither of the above stopped me from enjoying the game though. Where the game excels is hidden content. Even over the 1600 hours, I didn't manage to find all the secrets, even though I'd actively searched for them wherever I'd gone. The hidden content ranges from prompting extra missions to loot to pop-cultural references. There are a plenty. Dracula? Sure. Harry Potter? Check. Grimms' Fairy Tales, Half-Life, Terminator, AC/DC, Aliens, ... This all without turning the main story into a farce, which is a feat in itself. Verdict: one of my favorite games of all time.

A good hack & slash game should have a replay value. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut, after combining three parts of the game into one, has it. The main campaign is finally long enough to be truly enjoyable. You can choose six different classes and each of them has a complex skill tree so you can specialize in various battle techniques. For a modest price you can reset skill points within the game so you may experiment which build suits you best. You can also choose how to develop your companion - Lady Katarina. She has less complex skill tree but you can adjust her behavior so that gives you a lot of possibilities as well. Fighting and looting system is solid. Nothing special but just good enough. Sometimes fighting can be a bit messy, especially if your enemies come from below as it’s hard to see them from a distance. Story and quests are also rather typical for the genre with tons of popular culture references. There are, however, a lot of side activities that keep things fresh: you can tinker with your items, enhance them, craft new artifacts etc., in some parts of the game you can position your troops to aid you, send your generals on difficult missions (choose wisely who is the most capable man for the task) or even send your pet chimera on a hunt. On top of that there are daily challenges and special missions that you can perform outside the campaign so there are a lot of things to do. The game doesn’t contain anything revolutionary but all these little things I mentioned earlier combined with solid mechanics give you a very enjoyable game without too frustrating moments. One thing is excellent: SECRETS! There are tons of them everywhere. Sometimes it’s just a special item that you can find in obscure area, sometimes you have to solve a simple puzzle but there are very complex secrets that take a few acts to solve. I love them with my whole heart and if you like secrets as well read the title of my review again. It’s an anagram :)

More then mindless slashing...

More then just a simple classic monster dungeon slashing game, this title is a steampunk heaven, dark story filled trip, with cheesy lines to lighten the mood and more references to pop culture then one could recognize. Beautiful graphics, free high res texture DLC pack and fitting victorian gothic music. Great and varied level design. Lots of different monster types and a huge variety of unique classes and abilities to get rid of such monsters. Levels full of hidden content that require some careful exploration. On top of giving you a nice companion that can be upgraded to different roles and utilities, you soon get to manage a base filled with strange characters and a tower defense minigame, if you fancy, otherwise send your captains to do your dirty work. Game is accessible by everyone not familiar with the genre with a friendly casual difficulty option that feels like godmode. Normal diificulty allows to finish the game without having to min-max gear or have to fiddle with gear enhanchments or gold farming. Controller is supported but camera zoom and rotation are not available. Additional adventure mode allows to play random generated missions that vary in difficulty and can be a great challenge for those wishing to continue slashing monsters. The game crashes randomly in the item enchanting menu, with no available fixes on GoG, Steam or the developers forum. Controller bug makes navigating the radial equipment menu a pain.
