Still enjoy it, tough though

I rented this game as a Mega Drive cartridge back in the '90s and enjoyed it a lot, though I wonder how I was able to complete it, having to repeat so many puzzles and obstacles so often. I admit that this time around I gave up trying to levitate to the end of the "Hall of Webs" without getting swarmed by spiders. Just too hard to keep control of your floating body and get to the end fast enough. I got a password for the next level from someone's Youtube playthrough(was the Mega Drive version, but the password still worked!). From there I was able to complete the game again without too much frustration. So the game follows the formula of working your way down dungeon levels and each floor has much the same background, but I think the game has a very good story, progressing nicely. I particularly liked going from fighting the goblins to forming an alliance with them. Often goblins and orcs are ugly, evil creatures in fantasy fiction. This was something a bit different. It's interesting too, playing the role of an old wizard with a walking rod in one hand, sword in the other. There are some bloody death scenes, particularly in the final battle with the dragon, but this DOS version doesn't have the Mortal Kombat style fatality scenes at the end of each duel was exclusive to the Mega Drive version I believe. The last point is Rob Hubbard's excellent music. The Mega Drive music was very good, but I'd not yet heard the Roland MT-32 version(default music is the inferior Adlib version, but the Roland emulator MUNT allows you to hear the music in its best form). I'll note that the first three ports of this game, Apple IIGS, Amiga and Atari ST had different music, by Douglas Fulton. I believe the NES version was the first to have Rob's music. I'd like have had the choice of playing one of the first three versions too so I could hear the other music and also experience the differences in gameplay i.e the duels have a different perspective.

Could have been a true classic

A lot of people just give up on this very difficult game and move on with their life. I can see why. I bought this game when it was released and was pretty disappointed with it, or a better phrase “let down”, yes mostly because you die a lot but because there really isn't any point to it. I remember getting pretty far in it and of course dying again and thinking myself all this is is dying to memorize a pattern until I get to the end. There are a lot of old games like this where you die, you memorize a pattern or things you shouldn’t do and try again but the problem is it's not fun doing that in this game. Still I have to admit the graphics were great for it's time and the whole feeling of going through a dungeon was handled very well and I think the Genesis version had music but for me the games playability suffers not to mention the iffy control scheme. It's good just not great and it's not total garbage. A game where the reward is not playing it anymore. Just one of those old games that coulda shoulda..

Back in the day hard tp survive

I agree with Roman5, I played this game many years ago and I died so many times I gave up. The game is fun no doubt but so hard to survive. I still have my original copy but it is so hard to get it up and running. Glad GOG has and just might give it an go again.

Sort of like Light Crusader

This game reminds me a lot of the game Light Crusader. Just for that reason I must rate 5! I grew up playing Light Crusader and in my nostalgic opinion it was one of the greatest games of its time and still is to this day. though I never had the chance to play this one as a kid, it still gives me that nostalgic feeling when I play it. It is definitely a difficult game and you will find yourself trying to figure out how to even attack the enemy and you will die quite often. If you are into the classic RPG, dungeon crawler, fantasy games like I am and like to try out the ones that you've never played before, I recommend trying this classic at least once.

One of the MOST disturbing games ever.

This is one of my favorites, when I seen it listed on GOG it was an automatic buy. The game play resembles the Sega Genesis version with graphics and sound to match. The game was good on the NES but in 1991 the game was published by EA and released ONLY on the Sega Genesis. It was AWESOME. It was adapted from the 1990 PC version and this game is that version. The Sega Genesis version was released only 10 months later and was directly ported from the PC version by Will Harvey. Basically a PC perfect translation and this is the original PC version, it plays exactly like the Sega Genesis version. The horror, the gruesome death scenes, the really cool fighting, which if you use technique and timing you can dominate the opponent if you're careful is present here too. The game also comes with a PDFR of the original PC Game Guide Book, it is an exact match too. The game is well worth playing, the story is the best part. If you ever liked movies like Dragonslayer (1981) or loved the Dragons in Skyrim you will like this game. It is a high fantasy setting with horror overtones and really goes for the kill. The death scenes must be seen to be believed. Remember this game came out in 1990. This is a PC PERFECT rendition of the game. BUY It, it's dark twisted fantasy waiting to be played. Look the game's advertising up for the Sega Genesis version. It's a thing of weird gaming beauty.
