Campy and charming

Ultra-cheesy, scenery-chewing, live-action cutscenes, creepy-campy atmosphere, and pretty difficult puzzles. On release, this game was one of the most technically impressive out there. Comparing the original versions of The 7th Guest and its main competitor, Myst, T7G looked better by miles with much nicer prerendered scenes, animated transition, and full-body acting integrated in the scenes. But Myst won out on atmosphere, story, world, and puzzles being integrated in the world and story. The 7th Guest is campy and charming, not one of the best retro adventure games, but worth checking out for fans of the genre. I have played this game about three times in my life, most recently this very playable 25th Anniversary Edition. Apart from y'know, having it work without hassel on modern systems, some of its quality-of-life improvements are also very welcome, others are deeply unnecessary like the "improved" graphics and UI highlighting, but luckily those can be turned off.

The 7th Guest

Captivating old game, some puzzles I had to look for solutions online, and there is a lot of retrace previous steps but I love the atmospehre and feeling of the game

All right, it you like being seasick

I don't know how it is for anyone else, but the "camera" movement of Ego going through the game is incredibly jarring and quite nausea-inducing. Is the guy walking from place to place in the game or being sent there via warp drive? If you are prone to motion sickness, be warned. The scene transitions of moving about the house are likely going to induce it. I actually had to look away from the screen to even get through the whole of it without becoming ill from being flung about the place. And I used to play this game with absolutely no problems, other than getting a crawling case of the creeps from it. The game itself is fun and spooky. What it does movement wise, isn't. I'm just happy the Legacy edition in the extras is the original version I played previously and has the non-catapulting movements in it. This anniversary edition truly needs help. And, judging from the reviews I've read here and elsewhere, it's a long list of what help it needs.

Glitchy game and lazy port

Don't get me wrong, I love 7th Guest game, original DOS. I found out about this game playing the Windows XP (Original DOS) using ScummVM, and honestly Scummvm port even tho hating ScummVM itself just because I can't just buy here and transfer to my Windows 98, even then It's a better version in comparison to this 25th Anniversary edition. Honestly this port is lazy... I have Windows 10 i7 and graphics card GTX 1080 and still the game is a lag fest, no graphic options to change (You can only change between enhanced and original) and it's very very glitch the moment you open the game. When you open the game it open a window with the studio logo and then open a second window with the game. Music in some sections are still missing and the lag is really what I hate the most, especially trying to solve puzzles. I liked the additional languages and subtitles and extra scenes it didn't have in the original, but even on sale buy this to get the original version using ScummVM, you will have a better experience believe me. Yeah the game have achievements and 25th anniversary edition have some lazy improvements like making AI of the microscope puzzle dumber in comparison to the original, but still avoid this lazy port please. Your wallet appreciates! I would give 1 star, but because they included all files from the original ScummVM version then it's a +.

Don't buy this

The graphics may be improved, sure, but don't get tricked by the rest of their promises. I got this game for $4, and that's despite already owning the original. The "making of" movie is nostalgic (they mention 3D studio!) but mostly boring. I mean, in the 11th hour they included the actual making-of, how they thought, how they did it, etc. Here? Nothing but a history lesson, and short at that. Seriously. Buy the original. This one is a rip-off.
