The client is drop-dead gorgeous. Her father is just plain dead - of an apparent suicide. She's certain he was murdered and is willing to do anything to prove it. Tex Murphy, P.I., is willing to do almost anything to make rent. The investigation leads Tex into the heart of a dark secret.
An elite team of specialists have created something unspeakable. Now each of them are marked for death, and so begins the reign of the Overseer.
Experience Mean Streets once again, with a deeper plot and superior quality
Great acting, challenging puzzles, romance, suspense and witty humor
A must-have for anyone who likes adventure games and a good mystery
With a sad heart, i write the review for the last full tex murphy release, finishing with an awesome climax that left me literally wanting more, this is a superb game!! Bring on project fedora!!!
If your on win7 64 you may need to change compatibility to win98 (if the game crashes like it did for me).
The gog install doesn't add to windows game folder correctly (I fixed the broken registry items and all was fine).
The game starts with a new case to solve and soon you'll be on your way.
The ingame graphics are a nice step up from the earlier Tex games. But, I found the controls to be a big step back [at first] and then a slight step back after a while of adjustment. I mainly use a combination of keyboard & mouse + a lot of shift. The movement overlay is interesting, but too slow and cumbersome.
The ingame video cutscenes are not going to fill your whole screen on today's monitors and resolutions, but its still good enough.
The puzzles range from easy to brain racking. If you just want to get through the game in a timely fashion - I skipped and finished many from using 911. At least one requires ALT+F to skip.
Sometimes you have no idea what your supposed to do so you might be running around in circles and may never notice something. I'm sure some have the patience and nothing else to do to spend time doing that and not look into the ingame hints section. There are a few times where the hints section does not help. It doesn't move onto the next step. So a faq in the internet might be needed.
The game is fairly long. I didn't time it but it has to be at lest 10 hours if cheating the entire time. I probably about spent 15 or so.
For a while you really don't have to save often but later on there are certain points where you better.
Overall, I liked it enough to say if you like these kind of games and can deal with the feel of old games on modern PCs, then you will like this one.
I liked it enough to keep at it to the very end.
I played this game when it was first released, and it strained the processing capabilities of my old desktop (I did have a DVD drive on it, but unfortunately it could not cope with the provided disc, so I was left with 8 CD-ROM things to swap). Still and all, I felt it a fine addition to the canon (even though it re-iterated a previous adventure).
So, my question to GOG is - Why tease we Mac users with the other Tex games but not allow us to enjoy "Overseer" on our swanky, new, over-powered machines?
Cheers.
The Tex Murphy series had reached its pinnacle with The Pandora Directive. In Overseer we get even better FMVs but the story this time around is kinda lacking. Basically, it's Mean Streets again. You no longer have multiple endings or even different paths to take as in TPD.
Acting is mostly on par with TPD, though it's lacking the massive cast TPD had. Still, there are some great actors like Michael York or Henry Darrow. You still get to choose between Entertainment and Gamer Mode, although there is not such a huge difference to them like in TPD. You can bypass some puzzles in E Mode and get extra points for solving puzzles quickly in G Mode.
The puzzles are your basic Tex Murphy fare with some real mindbenders and many jigsaw letters and photos. Conversations are still played out by selecting one of three options, but those have no real effect on the story for the most time.
A bit on the downside is also the fact that you get a massive cliffhanger at the end of the game that never got resolved in a game. There's still hoping for Project Fedora, though....
As far as I am concerned, if you have Windows 10 (64-bit) don't bother buying this. I remember the game from years ago and wanted a stroll down memory lane.
However, I only played the game for approximately half an hour. The majorrity of this gameplay was watching the intro sequence. I only pottered around in-game for a short while because early on (first thing really) I experiendced problems with the graphics/environment.
The game starts in Tex's office but there are "missing" items in the scene - for example filing cabinets. It is an office and you expect to explore what is around the room but there are images 'floating' around the scene. I suspect that these floating items are in the filing cabinets but I have real problems trying to interact with anything. I thought I would persevere - if there are glitches, fine. But, I gave up quickly.
I managed to amass 24 minutes in-game and thought I will report the problem, or refund the game at least. The reporting process, which I have never ever had to look at before, seems more complicated than some of the adventure games I download and play
Anyway, the game was cheap so I am not so bothered about refunding that I will go through the whole rigmarole of filling in this, that, and the other just to get a small amount of money back. I googled for a possible solution and thought it isn't worth my time trying to find a solution. If a game is being sold it should be sold ready, or at least with warnings.
Never mind. On to the next project, eh?
