System Shock: Enhanced Edition also includes the classic version of the game.
You're a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to Diego, a greedy Trioptium exec who bankrolls a rare cyberjack implant operation. After six months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you.
Once a prime corporate research facility, Citadel now teems with mindless cyborgs, robots and terribly mutated beings, all programmed to serve SHODAN, a ruthless A.I. There's scarcely time to think before it unleashes the first terror...
Exactly twenty one years after its first release, System Shock is back!
The Enhanced Edition adds a modern touch to this true classic gem, without taking anything from its unmistakable atmosphere.
See for yourself that the game that has been called the benchmark for intelligent first-person gaming, has lost nothing of its ability to keep you on the edge of your seat.
System Shock: Enhanced Edition features:
- Higher resolution support: up to 1024x768, and 854x480 widescreen mode.
- Mouselook support added.
- Remappable keys with three profiles to choose from: original controls, custom controls, and lefthanded controls.
- Some original game bugs fixed.
Rocket through cyberspace to steal information, hack security and grapple with watchdog defense programs enslaved to a maniacal computer.
Survive battle after battle against armies of killer cyborgs and deadly robots as you collect hardware attachments, life-sustaining patches and deadly weapons to combat mindless mutants.
Test your intelligence by solving puzzles, rewiring access panels and outwitting SHODAN in its own cyber-realm.
Enjoy the vastly improved controls and graphics of the Enhanced Edition - or keep your experience as close to the original as possible with the Classic version.
Despite what the requirements say, it seems to run fine on my ancient 2 GHz single-core machine with WinXP. Try it at your own risk though.
I've always liked the 3D LGS games (System Shock and Ultima Underworld 1&2) but felt the controls didn't age well, making them hard to revisit. This release of SS seems much more playable.
Don't get me wrong. System Shock 1 is eternal classic. For quite a long time it was possible to run it (even for free or using previously bought copy) inside dosbox / via community crafted version called SSP. But the selling point of this particular enhanced edition is the inclusion of the new engine called SHLINK. And that's where the problems start. Literally minutes after release this appeared: https://www.gog.com/forum/system_shock_series/sshock_enhanced_edition_crashes_2_sec_after_intro_started . Meaning: for large group of ppl this game crashes immediately after running it. As time goes, it starts to be pretty clear the bug manifests itself under very different conditions for different ppl, which is never a good sign. So what's here to blame is the fact almost week after release with known showstopper GOG is still selling it and announcing as some feat. Which it is not, usual practice in industry has reversed logic - you pay alphatesters to do work for you, NOT you let customers pay to do alphatesters for you.
Had few attempts before, but couldn't get through the UI and cyberspace.
Not this time! I'm surprised at how good this game is and loved how SHODAN had a back up plan for a back up plan.
I've heard people were complaining about a number of guns being useless, which is kinda true. I've used a Stun gun once and dropped immediately, didn't use a rail gun too often because of the splash damage (same thing with grenades), shot few tranquillizer darts but those weren't effective at all, dropped using energy weapons in the late game because I prioritized saving up energy for the energy shield. So I used regular guns for the most time.
The controls are janky. It's not that much of a problem for the most time, but it hinders platforming sections or sections where you would appreciate better movability.
I'm glad I've heard about writing down numbers near computer nodes so I didn't have to backtrack. The only time I've got stuck was at the Executive (7) level. The audiolog said something about security numbers being shuffled near the elevator, and indeed there were numbers. There was even a camera to show you the numbers without backtracking, but both codes were incorrect. Apparently the code was located in cyberspace, I just had to check cyberspace notes.
I wonder why is everyone referring SHODAN with male pronouns when both her voice and avatar have feminine features. Did they've changed it after writing things down?
my main regret is basically skipping the Security section by entering the middle tower via rocketboots and speed booster
The tag immersive sim is incorrectly applied to this game, so if you are looking for something like Deus Ex or Thief - this ain't it. It's also not really a typical RPG - it has no classes, stats or levels.
Not saying it is not immersive, it's just that label is commonly used to describe different kind of game.
This is at it's core a DUNGEON CRAWLER with a mix of adventure and first person shooting. The levels are mazelike by design - because it's what the genre is about. It's a game where you need to keep a notebook to keep track of important info like what are you supposed to do and where to go.
I admit I didn't think I would enjoy this game as much as I do, I'm somewhere hafway through and I'm loving it. And I'm not that into dungeon crawlers - most of them I find boring and repetitive - this game something else though. And the enhanced editions ability to mouselook and rebind all controls really make a world of difference compared to standard edition.
Some caveats though - latest patch introduced horrible stuttering that tanks the performance. You can fix this by reverting to previous version and disabling auto update in the launcher options. The downside of this version though is the risk that sometimes the enemy AI might bug out or your map notes get deleted. The AI thing is not that common and if you just keep your notebook updated you should be fine.
