Kate Walker, a young ambitious lawyer from New York, is handed what seems to be a fairly straightforward assignment. Just a quick stopover to handle the sale of an old automaton factory hidden in the alpine valleys, then straight back home to New York. Little did she imagine, when embarking on this task, that her life would be turned upside down.
On her expedition across Europe, traveling from Western Europe to the far reaches of Eastern Russia, she encounters a host of incredible individuals and locations full of extraordinary machines and an amazing atmosphere. In her attempt to track down Hans, the genius inventor - the final key to unlock the secret of Syberia - she will traverse both land and time on a journey that will throw all that she values into question, while the deal she sets out to sign turns into a life-changing experience.
not a bad game, but not the most exciting story (I only played 1 hour though).
Furthermore, the automatic saves occur at intervals that are much too long, so expect to loose some progress if you get interrupted by real life.
...but I actually wasn't able to bring myself to finish the game. It's a very visually interesting game, with interesting story concepts. The problem is that the execution just falls flat somewhere along the way.
The supporting characters are completely uninteresting, and about an hour in, Kate herself started to rub me the wrong way. Maybe I was just tired of the awkward movement paths or the frustratingly executed puzzles. When I found myself with zero desire to explore what should have been a very interesting world, a main character I'd grown to actively dislike, and a tendency to clench my jaw during quests... I knew it was time to throw the towel in.
I'm surprised to hear that Syberia is sometimes compared to The Longest Journey- I was on the edge of my seat with TLJ, and had to force myself to try and finish Syberia.
Pro:
- nice setting, steampunk optics
- fine graphics
- slow gameplay
Con:
- illogical puzzels
- non linear plot, with non linear content, so you have to double check everything and every room
I installed Syberia without any problems, the game starts up well and works fine.
I played it with great enthusiasm for nearly three hours and then came the breakdown.
You start in a little european village with a really nice steampunk graphics. Although the stories plays in the 2000s you feel like being part of a 1890s story. The beginning is easy and you can easily follow the plot. But after a while you have different options, where to go.
My problem was, that I at first inspected the factory, an I did it in detail and solved any puzzle I found. After that I went to the family house, and the story then led me back to the factory, and now without doing anything special new puzzels appeared.
There were new things in rooms I have inspected before, things that were not there before.
I had to check everything twice. That irritated me and I was not sure, if I had to check all the places, where I have been before again. So I stopped playing.
I cannot recommend that game.
