Enter Japan in the Age of Warring States. At the center of this role-playing, action-adventure simulation of combat, statesmanship and intrigue, you are a samurai warrior struggling for Honor. More important than life itself, Honor is crucial to achieving your ultimate goal: unifying the country under your noble rule.
In Sword of the Samurai, you will be part of the culture of feudal Japan, and you must learn to live by its rules. To succeed as a samurai, you must think like the samurai. Learn when to leave your sword in its sheath, when to draw it - and what to do with it once it’s drawn. You will fight duels, lead troops on the battlefields, and defend your family against assassins and kidnappers. If you are courageous and honorable, you may advance to become the head of your clan, and warlord of your province. If you master diplomacy and generalship, and outmaneuver your rivals, you may even become Shogun - absolute ruler of Japan. But remember that in all cultures power corrupts - and those who seek absolute power don’t always play by the rules.
Unite all 48 warring provinces in common allegiance to you, and earn the title of Shogun, military ruler of all Japan.
Computer-controlled opponents make decisions based on your actions -- and on the actions of other rival characters.
Vindicate yourself in duels against rivals who would like nothing better than to diminish your Honor.
Furious melee action against multiple warriors takes place in castles, villages and rice paddies.
Real-time battles involving infantry, cavalry and muskets on battlefields that vary with every conflict.

While Sword of the Samurai probably wasn't a bad game in its day (in fact, it received many positive reviews) it hasn't aged well, meaning it’s only a merely average game nowadays. While being set in feudal Japan is a plus and role-playing as a samurai is great fun, the game is let-down by infuriating mini-games and there’s a bit of a difficulty spike once you start controlling whole provinces as the game changes its focus to strategy rather than role-playing. If Sword of the Samurai were to be remade for modern audiences, I’d probably keep the themes behind the mini-games (e.g. fighting bandits, duels and army battles) but would rework them to make them more accessible and fun (and maybe mouse-based?).
This is the kind of games I joined GOG for. Immersive game in wich you must climb the ladder of your clan from a small lord to becoming the ruler of Japan. On your way you will fight sword duels, fight battles, sneak into castle to kill an enemy lord and manage your lands and armies.
I wish they made so imaginative and immersive games nowadays...
Reminiscent of Sid Meier's Pirates, this game has the same mixture of mini-games and map adventures. Pretty much perfect for 1989, and still enjoyable now though its old style DOS graphics and limited options show its age.
An absolute masterpiece of gaming that will never ever be reproduced using modern technology. This game is the single most comprehensive simulator of life as a lord in feudal Japan. Shogun 2 Total War may be the closest modern remake of this game yet it still only replicates 10% of gameplay.
This game is similair to Sid Meier's Pirates, in that it combines several different activities into a cohesive and comprehensive simulator of life, only in this case it is a life as a feudal lord in Japan during the Shogun era (Pirates! of course simulating life as a ship captain during the Golden Age of Piracy in the region of the Caribbean in Central America).
Kidnap and rescue princesses from Japanese castle towns! Trade insults and duel for honour! Fight real time large scale battles! Manage your fiefdom!
