Remember having a demo on some sort of Xbox Live Arcade Compilation disc. I enjoyed the gameplay and art style of it. It is a puzzle game and it's a good one. Controlling a marble through a course with obstacles never gets old and it was done well in this game. Was a memorable game of the XBLA line up. Reminds me a bit of Marble Blast Ultra.
But on Xbox 360 there was never an option to own that game physically, so relying on XBLA marketplace to stick around. With the Wii U and 3DS Store shutdown now, games just get lost. Some consoles require online licence checks for digital downloads again and again before launching the game, guess what happens when those servers shut down. Thankfully that problem has been solved now that the game is on GOG DRM-free.
When this game came to GoG I was very happy. I played the original and had a lot of fun with it. Now the facts:
The game looks and plays really good. I played it with my XInput compatible controller and the only thing I hate about it is the camera controls. It's completely reversed and I couldn't find any option to change that. You can also use mouse and keyboard and fortunately the game can handle WASD -and- the arrow keys so even left-handed players will be able to play it.
The levels are well designed and offer some challenge without being too hard. But I only played the first 12-13 levels so far. The physics work very well and most of the puzzles (if not all of them) are based on them.
It's not a masterpiece but a game you can enjoy in short bursts in your lunchbreak or something :)
I originally bought this on the Xbox 360 all those years ago, and it's held up remarkably well. Some of the puzzles can get a little tedious or frustrating from the physics of the game, but still fun.
Best played with a controller.
It is a simple game where you guide a ball from start to finish, solving simple physic puzzles along the way. That is all you need to know.
Personally I like to play those games when I am in the mood for a simple game and need a break from triple AAA quality production, and Switchball really is a simple game that can be completed quickly.
But also keep in mind, it's simplicity could be also considered it's main flaw, the game is so simple and relaxing people might feel underwhelmed. If you want a game with good graphics or deep gameplay, you should play something else. The physics are also a bit sluggish, leading to some trial and error (which is not frustrating thanks to a really generous checkpoint system). The Air Ball especially is not consistent and can be annoying to overcome obstacles with.
A warning though, I hate the last level in this game, because the last level lacks checkpoints towards the end and exactly there the unreliable physics works against you. The ball rolls of the rails so often and you can't do anything about it except reloading the last checkpoint, which forces you to replay the last part for an entire minute, over and over again. So be prepared to suffer when close to the end.
In short, if you want to play something simple and easy for the mind after cracking some tough or long games, give Switchball a try. But you must have a fondness for simple games in terms of gameplay and graphics, if your standarts are really high, this game will disappoint you. For me it did what the game was supposed to do, giving me a small change of pace and a break from my hardcore gaming.
It's a pretty cool game, but it does get frustratingly hard after a while. Some of the puzzles are tedious due to the checkpoint system. Sometimes you have to do things to set up your section and if you fail, you have to go through all that set up again. Gets annoying at times. But it is a good physics based challenge that can take some finesse in movement. I recommend it if you get it with the Sir Whoopass bundle.
