I don't normally do this even on STEAM, but I wish to point out that the reviews that it only SH: Crusaders Extreme are only partially right. To play SH: Crusaders HD you need click on "More" and on "Other" you will find Stronghold Crusader HD.
You can also go to "More" and on "Manage Installation" you click on "Show on Folder" There it will show both Stronghold Crusader HD and Stronghold Crusader HD Extreme.
For some unknown reason GOG just throws at you Stronghold Crusader Extreme HD at you first.
As for reviewing the game itself, I may do it at a later date when I have a firmer grasp of the game and mechanics.
People giving bad reviews seems to be focusing on the "Extreme" version - and they're right, it sucks.
But if you click on "additional executables", you can access the original Crusader game, in HD mode. That's what makes this purchase worth it.
If Age of Empires II was the best of that series, Crusader in the equivalent of the Stronghold series.
For me it's a five star game. One of my favourite. I didn't particularly liked the second, but the original Stronghold Crusader is in my heart.
The only pet peeve for me is that you actually get two games with the purchase: Stronghold Crusader HD (the classic) + Stronghold Crusader Extreme (a 2008 remastered).
While I adore the classic, I just hate the Extreme version. They could have improved the AI, the graphics or whatever, but no.
No, with this version they decided to add self-spawning troops. In my opinion, this demeans the whole nature of the game. In the new version they also extended the limit of troops/peasants to 10000, and added two new buildings and special 'Powers', but the game worked perfectly fine also without them. So...Was it really necessary?
The good thing is that you're not forced to play this extreme version, you can play the classic (I use a 1440p monitor just fine) - by downloading it in the extras of the game - and then launch it in GOG Galaxy through the More -> Other menu.
The country was in a collapse when I was a kid so we started dealing with PCs a bit later. It took time for us to explore them and the possibilities. You know, playing with Word and Excell documents, Paint. And we had a couple of games, including this.
My first years of playing this game I didn't even know what I was doing. It was more like taking crayons out of the box, figuring out what colors there are and like, smelling them and getting used to the feel when holding it.
Just this year I figured out I could go back to this game and start treating it like a game and beat it. I did it and the little me is so proud of me.
