John Woo Presents Stranglehold stars martial arts star Chow Yun-Fat as Inspector Tequila, a detective in Hong Kong's police force who is traveling the globe in search of his kidnapped daughter.
The game features a single-player story mode in which players take the role of Tequila and fight their way through cities such as Hong Kong and Chicago to locate the missing child who is held captive by mafia members and gangsters.
Players will have the opportunity to earn style points by performing such moves as running up banisters while shooting and when enough points are acquired gamers can execute moves that include the "Tequila Bomb" or enter "Tequila Time." "Tequila Time" is a sequence during a gunfight when enemies are slowed down while players maintain their speed, making it easier to hit enemy targets.

What improvements we made to this game:
1.1 v2 GOG changelog (29 September 2025)
Added a new option to freely adjust the FOV on the fly using the F5, F6, and F7 keys.
Slightly tweaked the default camera settings so adjusting mouse sensitivity feels smoother and more natural.
The mechanics are still crisp to this day and don't feel janky at all aiming is also crisp too. I just wish that this had some subtitles for better story understanding.. otherwise its a steal for 2 dollars (sale price)
Stranglehold is a game developed by Midway and Tiger Hill Entertainment, released on September 5, 2007. It is the sequel to the film Hard Boiled. The player assumes the role of Tequila Yuen, and along with her, they defeat enemies and bosses. Now, let's move on the game's rewiew.
Story And Characters
Stranglehold begins with the murder of a police officer. Tequila Yuen is assigned to investigate. Meanwhile, Tequila's wife and daughter are kidnapped. Tequila Yuen must track down both the police officer's killer and the kidnappers. I actually liked the story of the game, although it may sound cliché (while writing this rewiew). but story is good. It's not stolen.
Gameplay
The game has easy-to-learn controls and smooth gameplay. Personally, I had no trouble with the controls. You control the character from a third, person perspective. The camera angle is good. You can play the game with ease.
Graphics
The graphics are quite good for 2007. Both Tequila's appearance and the skins used in the game look pretty good. The game engines have also supported the graphics quite well, and the game is a plus (there's a "dead men dancing" bug in some places).
Atmosphere
Although the atmosphere of the game feels like Max Payne, its extra features and music make you feel like you're playing a separate game.
Music
The music used in the game is another plus, as it's excellent and immerses you in the game's atmosphere. The more you listen do it, the more you'll want to play it.
Artificial Intelligence
The AI is good. Both the enemies and the bosses are well-done. It's not F.E.A.R., but it's still good.
Bosses
Boss battles are sometimes difficult and sometimes easy. If you're not good at killing bosses, improve yourself first, then buy this game.
Extra Features
There's "Bullet Time" in the game, but it's called "Tequila Time". Using it, you can kill your enemies and bosses more easily.
There are first aid boxes in the game, you can renew your health by picking them up.
The game also features abilites that unlock as you kill enemies: health regeneration, close-range fire, sustained fire, and spinning fire. These abilites allow you to kill enemies and bosses more easily.
Final Word
Stranglehold has become my favourite game. It's Midway's best game since Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, gameplay, graphics, atmosphere, music, AI, bosses and extra features, so I recommend this game to everyone.
My Rating:
82/100
I realized I've wanted to play this game since 2007, when I played a preview demo at Penny Arcade Expo. My PC wasn't good enough then; I tried it on xbox 360 but didn't like using a controller, and there were some performance issues. Finally, I've completed the game! It's fun and stylized, but I have to knock a star off for a few things:
-field of view (FOV) out of the box is nigh-unplayable until you apply a 3rd party fix (on pc gaming wiki).
-uneven gameplay. difficulty spikes, weird world-interacting mechanics, getting stuck on world geometry... I think you do more damage in slow mo or hiding behind cover, which seems like... just let the guns do the damage they do, ya know? also most bosses are "shoot them until they die," and levels are padded with throwing more and more enemies at you.
-it's a short game! the part that took longest was replaying places I kept dying.
That said - it's a lot of fun. I beat it in about two sittings, and immediately started over on Hard Boiled difficulty. Owes a lot to John Woo/Chow Yun Fat's film, Hard Boiled - a must-watch if you like this game but haven't seen it.
