Cool story but some hard puzzles
Cool story. Most puzzles are fine, but there is 2 or 3 puzzles that are almost impossible. Thank God for YouTube walkthroughs.

Dark atmosphere and a nice story
Still Life is a dark, violent murder mystery adventure game, where you play the role of an FBI agent Victioria McPherson, investigating serial killer murders in 2004 Chicago, but you also play as her grandfather, Gustav McPherson, who was a private investigator in 1922 Prague, also investigating a series of serial killings that seem eerily similar. The strongest point of the game is probably the dark, opressive atmosphere. The game is indeed brutal and displays the effects of horrible violence, but it doesn’t really seem exploitative. Instead, it seems like a real-ish enough dive into a reality of investigating some of the horrible crimes that do indeed happen in real life. The story itself is nice as well – while I didn’t really like Victoria that much, I did like the character of her father, Gus, who was neatly fleshed out in his playable flashbacks. You can make reasonable guesses alongside the way to try and guess the conclusion of the story. If I had to note any particular drawbacks, it’s the rather cliffhanger-y and sequel-bait-ish ending, but the game overall was interesting enough not to be spoilt by that. As far as gameplay goes, I would describe most of the puzzles as average in difficulty, and sometimes pretty enjoyable to figure out. They are a good mix of item hunting and using the right items on right things, more classic puzzles with mechanisms that have moving parts, as well as some “riddle” style puzzles where you have to follow written instructions. I didnt' remember it being this bad
Half the time characters, especially Gus don't move from scene to scene unless you goto another window then when return to game they will have moved. But it doest really matter because of that stupid laser puzzle which is unbeatable.

(Played it on Mac M1 with Porting Kit. Works fine, stable fps. Two freezes throughout the game, so don't forget to save). Finally I beat it! The visuals, the overall style is just fantastic. I'm going to give it 5 for that only. For me it overcomes the flaws this game has. I'd always prefer beautiful artistic pre-renders over 3d. One of the most beautiful and classy games I've played. The story is a good balance. It has some silly elements, yet with the right amount of mystery and dark themes. It's a dark story not trying to go all the way 'realistic'. And thanks god for that — I am damn tired of all these trauma dumps and hysterical TV series style reenactment in a lot of modern games which is supposed to 'deepen the characters'. I don't get all the hate about the puzzles. I mean, the lockpicks are evil indeed, but other than that they are beatable. There are however some more easy fixable problems which make the puzzles more annoying than they could be. The bucket puzzle: it is itself is pretty cliched, can be solved in a sec, but I had to reach for the walkthrough for that because... I couldn't find the zone where I can empty that damn bucket! Usually that happens because there's another active zone next to the active zone, and you just don't realize there's something else there to click on. The scalpel near the toolbox - another 'great' example of that problem. It's funny how defunded Chicago police seem to be. They barely have enough officers for the crime scenes, and no people at all to watch the cameras in the security room. There are no paper cups or even sugar at the coffee machine and Victoria has to drive her own car for work.

Still Good in 2024 (like it was in 2006)
*IMPORTANT*: if the game doesn't start in Windows 11, use DXWnd (full screen mode). I played this game for the first time in early 2006. I was 15 at the time and I really liked it. I decided to buy it and play it again, since it's so cheap here on GoG and man, it's still good! I don't want to spoil the story, so I'll try to summarize the pros/cons. PROs: * Great storyline. * Great atmosphere. * Sound is great too. * Victory is a very intriguing main character. * Longevity. It is about 10 hours of gameplay. Cons: * Some puzzle are a bit weird. * Sometimes it is not very clear what you have to do or where to go. * The ending may not please everyone. Now it is time for me to play Still Life II :)
