Based on the glowing reviews here, I thought this was going to be a great game. Unfortunately not. Only buy this game if you like a simplistic in variety side-scroller that makes you re-do the same part over and over when you die. I personally don't want to do this. It just makes me frustrated and angry at it. This is not entertainment and it's wasted money for me.
It does though run flawlessly on LinuxMint 18.3.
You dig down, collect gems, sell them in town (up the mine chute), upgrade, and try to get to the end boss fully upgraded. Simple but fun.
Graphics are quite simple but very nicely done, cartoonish. It's like a 2D platformer with digging. Not much in sound but basic effects and nicely fitting background music.
Rusty the bot (main character) is also a nice fella, just trying to get to the bottom of things. Literally. Nothing too much save-the-world stuff, politics or such. Just some simple fun gameplay. Smashing rocks and jabbing along.
As others have noted, it is quite short. Beat it in maybe 5-7h, I forget the exact number. Not too short, not too long for me. I like it when the game doesn't drag along too long needlessly.
I like to play casually for shorter periods every now and then. I could pick this game up any time, play it short or a bit longer, make some progress, and checkpoints are quite easy to reach.
Bought this on one of the discounts, great for that price. Played fine on my Linux business laptop.
Steamworld Dig is a fantastic little gem. For the current price, there's no reason not to buy this game. It's not terribly long, I think it took me about 4.5 hours to complete it, but for entertainment value per dollar spent I don't think you could find better. If you're looking for a compelling story, character arc, setting, or dialog look elsewhere. If you're looking for good clean fun, Steamworld Dig is your ticket to happiness.
The SteamWorld series are games of genre in the same world of robots. Dig and Heist are well interconnected and a-must for every gamer. I decided to play them again now that the Heist 2 is out.
