In the bloody aftermath of an intergalactic war between powerful alien races, a once-thriving network of starships, space stations, and planets are left lifeless and bear the scars of the apocalypse. As Stationmaster, it is up to you to rebuild the abandoned space stations, reunite the survivors, and bring the old Empire back to its former glory.
Populated by diverse alien species, such as the ecologically-minded and laid back Karmarama or the caring and gentle Dahenese Sirens, each space station comes to life with crime, trade, entertainment, racial tensions, and friendships. With these factors in mind, reconstruct and operate your station by managing the diverseand varied resident aliens while you also protect them against threats such as meteor showers, alien vermin infestations, roving bands of space pirates, and outbreaks of particularly virulent plagues. It’s not easy rebuilding civilization from the ruins, but the future is in your hands. Will you rise up to the challenge and build a Startopia that is ideal for everyone?
Nine primary character races, each with a unique look and function. Each inhabitant is an individual character, with unique moods, desires, personal history, and humorous character animations.
Fully functioning alien society, with racial animosity and friendships, crime and punishment, leisure and entertainment, and dynamic functioning economy.
Bio-deck with editable landscape and manageable ecosystem gives you complete control of terra-forming.

Startopia is a must-have for anyone who's a fan of the management genre. With brilliant graphics that haven't dated all that much and and a genuinely wonderful Douglas Adams sense of humour*, this game gets so many things right and, crucially keeps things interesting. Seasoned players may find the game a bit short, but that's probably the worst thing I could say about this game. For £5.99 it's a steal!
*note the "u". this is a British game through and through.
Ah Startopia, so many winter hours inside my house building and managing my own space-station. I have so many great memories of this i don't know where to start, well first of all the graphics were awesome and if find them still absolutely beautiful to this day.
This game had a lot of stuff you could do, from zooming in like you were walking in the station yourself, to trading with passing space-ships while keeping an eye on intergalactic fluctuation of goods prices and managing you garden level to grow the right plants.
There is also a lot humor in this game and I spent hours just looking at what visitors and employees spend their free time. If you played to much builder games and are looking for something unusual in the genre this game is definitely worth it.
Now i got to go back to managing my station, a shuttle full of scary parasites infected aliens has docked to my station and I have to go check if my hospital is prepared !
Startopia is a fairly addictive game, but sadly the content creation tools are a bit baroque and so there are few player-created scenarios which work correctly -- and not that many to begin with. Mastering the included levels will take a few days' spare time at best, and you'll get a couple more days out of the working contributed maps out there before you're just repeating yourself. It's still a great game and GOG is asking very little for it, so it's still well worth buying.
I played this game for a while..
IMO Plus points:
Well presented with pleasing graphics.
Endearing and comedic british narration.
Presents some novel yet well implemented game mechanics .
Game makes an effort to be entertaining.
Camera angles are excellent!
The Aliens and robots are cool!
Although its a bit slow. Its never frustrating
GOG price seems reasonable.
IMO negative points:
Dont remember it ever getting very exciting.
That Endearing and comedic British narration might make you rage (Go check it out on Youtube and have a taste).
Can get a little repetitive after a while.
If you like management games that provide some new approaches and have some extra character this game is worth considering.
Ideal for players who prefer a calming and organic feeling sim rather than players who like high tension and drama.
A good 3/5...
If you like the concept then you will have a good time with the game.
If any kind of building game appeals to you, then do give Startopia a try. Regardless of where you're coming from, this game will have something to do for you. It capture the love to detail and fun gimmicks of Theme Park or Theme Hospital, has enough complexity in micromanaging structures and employees to be fun for fans of SimCity, and so much more to to for everyone else.
Want to meditate? Alright, then expand your garden level. Want to fight? Conquer the entire station! Want to get rich? Noone's holding you back. Severe case of OCD? Design the space station layout of your dreams.
Startopia is a wonderful game. Give it a try!
