STAR WARS™ Rebellion

This has been one of my favorite games since I was a kid. It was a steep learning curve, but that's what made this game so enjoyable. For those considering the game, there will be some visual glitches when you play it for the first time. Simply save the game file and restart the application. It usually goes away after one or two tries. Definitely recommend for those who love the long game!

This was always a favorite game of mine. THANK YOU GOG!! I still have my original disk, but have had no luck running it since windows 7. Apparently GOG has solved this. If you like turn based strategy, give this one a try. Also, there is a great editor that is still downloadable, called RebEd. For anyone having trouble with the upside down icons, running in Win 95 compatibility mode fixes this for me.

As a kid I read about this game and always wanted to play it. I tried a number of times to get a copy but never succeeded. I had given up until suddenly i saw that GOG had it. I purchased it immediately and didn't look back. The battle mechanics are old school and a little clunky, the AI isn't the best, but I still loved every minute of it. Sending a fleet of SSD's to wipe out the Rebel Headquarters was a great feeling. There is a bug that will cause a crash from time to time so SAVE often or risk a very high level of frustration. The one thing i hate about this game is having to listen to the tutorial at the beginning every time I start a new game.

A great turn based strategy game that does not show its age much. The Star wars theme is a bonus on a really great game. It really is a good user interface, lots of good choices/ options, great feel to the game, and one of my all time favourites, better to my mind than MOO2. Of course there are places I'd rather were very different: Manual Ship combat is poor and AI is simplistic (not moronic). A gfx upgrade would be nice (and easy? Some websites offer gfx files uploads I hear, but haven't tried them myself). But many of the other complaints I've heard I don't recognise. I like the economy: I think the balance of resources/ industry/ simplicity/ control/ detail is OK. The user interface offers lots of easy tools to keep track. And the joy of reaching a major film story point is great too! The Lucas magic + great game = Total classic of all time. I think Birth of the Federation was the closest other game to this? (That one seems lost as its development site last update was >5years ago).

Rebellion was an overly-ambitious game made by developers who clearly had a great vision and who loved Star Wars, but who had to work under the restrictions of 90's-era PCs and the disadvantage of being among the first to incorporate many of Rebellion's core game mechanics. One of the most disappointing things about Rebellion is its space combat, specifically how infrequently it happens and how little strategy is involved. Neither side will likely engage the other until one of them researches hyperdrive interdictor ships which allow them to prevent the other side from retreating - and even then, they'll probably still retreat unless they have an overwhelming advantage. Only in the mid to late game does the presence of interdictors on both sides finally lead to combat taking place on a somewhat regular basis, and from that point onward it's largely a game of cat and mouse as the side that's stronger will have essentially won the game as soon as they catch the other side's fleet. Protip: send troop carriers to the uninhabited outer rim planets, drop troops there, and they become yours. Diplomacy and invasion are for scrubs. It's frustrating more often than it's fun, it's ugly more often than it's attractive, the audio is annoying and repetitive, and some important gameplay elements are never explained whatsoever. But for some reason, I CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT.
