A Bioware classic and by far the best Star Wars RPG out there. The story in this game is one of the best narratives that I have seen in any Star Wars game. It is Full of great twists and characters. The graphics even by toady standards still looks good. The music is nice especially the manaan theme. The game length is also perfect as it is not too long and not too short. This game has high replay value. Fully recommend this game.
First, a disclaimer. This is a review of the Steam version from several years ago. I can't comment on running the GOG version on a modern windows machine.
This is a GREAT game. Yes, each world is rather linear, but you get to play a Jedi! How cool is that? You also get to choose between the light and dark side, and get bonuses or penalties to force powers based on your alignment. You also get a choice of Jedi disciplines, and can choose your companions from a long list for every outing. I also recommend switching up companions often just to hear the conversation between them Some quests can only be activated by having a certain companion with you on a certain world, so try them all! This also has a great plot.
The graphics are definitely primitive by today's standards, but it is still VERY fun.
KoTOR is one of those games that often pop up in "Top 10 cRPG" and similar lists all the time - and there are good reasons for that.
Set milenia before events of orginal trilogy, game is just all people love about Star Wars - force mystery and misticism, knight like duels and blasters blazing, and never ending struggle between light and dark side of the force. Story is no doubt the strongest driving force behind game awesomness - not only will you go throu many diffrent planets and enviroments, and make plethora of light vs drak choices, but also will be accompanioed with some of of the most well crafted NPC any cRPG party could ask for. Fan favourites are of course Bastila (aka strong female character long before it bacame a popular theme in games ) and HK-47 (psychotic killing machine and comic relif at the same time ), but even less colorfull ones still serve the plot well. And the twist around 3/4 of the game...Let's just say it's simply jaw dropping first time you experience it. And it's the very reaseon why even now, *14 years* after it's relase people still try to not spoil the story to any player unfortune not to play this game.
Also I must praise mechanical side. Based on modified D20 system, game have turn based, yet fluent real time combat, tons of gear, weapons, armour and equipment to use and play with. Even some customisation is offerd, tho meaingfull one is mostly limited to light sabres. What also to be praised is the game have really well paced strem of exp, so progression and leveling up fells very natural - you should hit final 20 levels just before final location without much trouble.
My only two (minor) compalins are that, primo - while true to lore, force users are just *stupidly* overpowerd compared to force insensitives. Secundo - close to the game finale, you will HAVE TO take a side, either light or dark, potencialy even turning 180 from what you build up prior to that moment. No third way, no gray side - but that's very star wars-y
played the game, really likeable characters and cool twists. i barely liked star wars before i played this game. Highly reccommend. This is way better than the second game. (:
