Sometimes, the only way to restore peace is to wage war.
The alliance between the Klingons and the United Federation of Planets has never been stronger. Together, they begin construction of a starbase with the ability to detect cloaked ships in the neutral zone. The only things standing in their way: the Romulans. Play three sides of an epic conflict for control of the galaxy. Although the challenges are many, the goal is one - command your starship to victory for your empire.
Customize each ship's weapons, shields and combat systems to create thousands of ship variants. Recruit crew members who improve your fleet by gaining experience and abilities.
Play 4 exclusive levels as the Borg. While piloting the powerful Borg Cube, battle Klingon and Federations forces as you track down rogue Borg.
Engage in large-scale, real-time, ship-to-ship combat. Improved multiplayer Dynaverse mode allows dozens of players to fight for galactic supremacy.
I finally got the game run with video's and not crash by opening dxcfg.exe and setting up the "Display Mode" to be "set by application" and the "Presentation" set to "Windowed". As a hunch I tried to see what that resolution or display mode was and it's 1024x768. The will not properly display the menus and will crash the game with the video's and etc at a bigger resolution. This is it, sure turn on AA and AF but it will be a small window or resize your desktop if you go to fullscreen, your call. IMO this needs to be fixed asap. Will rereview after fixed.
The idea of commanding a space ship in battle is great. Have it in the Star Trek universe is amazing. We are even familiar with the mechanics: we know how shields, phasers, torpedoes, transporter works. The idea is amazing! And the veneer is perfect: narrated by Patrick Stewart and faithful to the Trek universe.
But the execution.... horrible. It comes down to the control and the balance. I started with the campaign, but the controls are so un-intuitive that I couldn't figure out how to fire the weapons. So I went to the tutorial. From that point on, I was fighting the controls more than my opponent. The interface is ridiculously complicated. And the cooldowns are exceedingly long. What should have been an exciting 5 minute battle took me 45 minutes. And I lost. And that was the TUTORIAL fight!
I persevered and went on to the first mission. I tried my best to join the battle, but barely fied my phaser once before my AI friend completed the mission. Next. This time I'm alone against 2+ ships. They are faster, strong, and more manoueverable than me. I spent 1 hour trying to get in position to fire and, on the rare occasion that I was, watched 90% of my shots miss. All the while, the ennemy was always on my back, hitting me consistently, cloaked or not. And even in 2 against 1, it took 1 hour for me to get taken out. The only action I was getting was from clicking frantically on the interface to try to get my ship to do what I needed it to do. But it was pointless. Funless and frustrating.
Like other reviews here so far, I've had the same issue with the game not launching. No window appears but the game sounds and introduction plays in the background (you can hear Picard narrating the opening sequence), until it errors out saying there isn't a Direct3D compatible device.
While there isn't a support page dedicated to the game, I was able to submit a support ticket along with the requested DirectX information that the company asked for. Hopefully they can figure it out somewhat quickly as this was a favorite game to play back in the day.
