Don't be discouraged

This game is absolutely fantastic. Leaping across platforms and chasms, whipping away bats, snakes, and hawkmen, bombing through the floors of a jungle to escape awful tiki-traps never gets old in this game. Each level is randomly-generated, so you will be greeted with a fresh experience every time you replay a level. And believe me, you will replay the levels. Spelunky is as fun as it is brutal -- you will have to invest some serious effort to be able to finish the first few areas of this game, let alone beat the final boss. However, with this difficulty comes huge satisfaction; it is easy to see your improvement at the game as you learn the skills necessary to beat each area. If you are a fan of difficult games with lots of re-playability and some "roguelike" elements, Spelunky is for you. The controls are tight, the animations are satisfying, and the theme of the game is fantastic. However, if you are easily frustrated or prefer a game that flaunts an expansive storyline, you may wish to consider other options.

Game for masochists

Ive tried liking this game, but its just too punishing. You basicly have to play a perfect game every time, and even then random events may lead to your death anyway.

Spelunker, but better

A long time ago I played Spelunker on the NES. Once I got the hang of it beating the game was easy. Problem was there were only 4 levels, so once you knew what to do it lost all its appeal. A couple decades later along somes Spelunky. It's almost the same game but with enough variation to make it fun. You'll get the hang of the basics pretty fast but you'll also be in for new surprises. Spelunky skips a lot of the rouge-lite charachter development and instead gives you new avatars to play with. You can skip ahead to new levels once you reach certain check points. Shops sell buffs and you'll occasionally find basic items to keep your stocks up. You'll have to balance time spent in the level with other activities like collecting loot and rescuing people trapped in the mine. Be careful! EVERYTHING will kill you. Dangerous animals, death traps, spikes, falls, explosions, boulders, ghosts, and worst of all, your own impatience will cost you your life. It's frustrating but you can always figure out how you screwed up. The game even keeps tally of how many times you've entered the mine with hashmarks at the entrance. I really enjoy this game and vcan totally rcommend it.

Deceptively challenging!

The premise and mechanics for this game are about as simple as they get. Don't let that fool you though as this is one of the more challenging platform games currently out there, which ultimately makes it all the more addicting. If you enjoy adventure styled platform games and you like your games on the challenging side....well, Spelunky is definitely for you. Definitely one of the best platform games I have seen in recent memory.

Good game. ONLY 360 CONTROLLER SUPPORT

The game is so much fun, highly replayable and very challenging, even withouth the daily challenge feature. But, it supports 360 controllers only, would have helped to know it before the purchase. Keyboard can be stressful.
