The game has some serious bugs that won't fixed here and the Uplay store version too. Enemies going crazy and some of the renders cannot work and graphical glitches happens with the working renderer. Tested on multiple PCs and multiple versions but the result is always the same: the gameplay is very limited by some bugs.
This game got ported to the Dreamcast under the name "Speed Devils," and Speed Devils is rad. I *still* play Speed Devils now, and I got that game when it was new in 1999. But what makes Speed Devils interesting is the career mode, characters, upgrade system and the betting mechanic that allows you to make wagers with other drivers until you piss them off enough that they challenge you to a vendetta race where the winner keeps both cars. Speed Busters, despite having all the same tracks and vehicles, does not have any of those elements. That's not the end of the world, but Speed Busters/Devils is not a game that excels on the strength of its level design or racing physics.
They're fine.
But they're not great!
And without the tournament mode, weirdo characters and betting mechanics that the Dreamcast port has, I consider this a curiosity at best. It's interesting to see a different version of a game I loved when I was a kid, but if I were a person that wanted to give it a fair shake and try to understand what makes it interesting, I'd find an entirely above board way to play the Dreamcast version.
I wanna say upfront, I never played this on the PC back in the day. I had a dreamcast, and it was one of my favorite games on the system. It was just crazy fun, with great controls, and great customization. If the PC version is as good, I'm gonna be in heaven.
My parents bought me this game when I was 10 or 12. Back then the graphics looked great and the speed was something very different to the mario kart game for n64 that I was used to. So, I played this game with such enthusiasm that now I feel tempted to give the game a really good review just for nostalgia.
But let's be real. I never won this game. I was defeated once... twice... and again, and again, and again. The difficulty is insane. And not only for a child, it's insane for anyone.
If you are thinking in playing casually, think again. You need to tryhard this or you will always see the same car and the same tracks forever. I never was able to unlock other cars, not even that. I recognise that I didn't tryhard this too much, just for one month maybe. There's people in this site speaking about playing one year to beat it.
It's nice for a retro collection however, if you feel like a collector. This game has all the spirit of the nineties.
