This is an old-school classic 3rd person shooter with atmospehre and personality. Being a big robot is cool and even better with wide range of weapons and nicely designed levels. This GOG release runs without any difficuties and looks better than ever. Shame I had not a chance to play it late 90's... but was happy to play it almost 20 years later.
Slave Zero is a very good game that came out in 1999. It didn't get a lot of attention, but it was a very fun, fast paced shooter. It's no Half-Life, Deus Ex or System Shock 2, but it is a very fun game to play. It starts out fairly easy with a relatively small number of somewhat weak enemies, but before long the screen is swarming with tough enemies all around. Basically you shoot or blow up anything that moves. Pure mindless entertainment!! Story is good, but not great. It's the simple, straightforward, fast-paced mindless action that makes Slave Zero so fun to play.
When I first installed Slave Zero, it crashed on startup (on WinXP 32-bit and Win7 64-bit). But a simple editing of C:GOG GamesSlave ZeroszHardware.ini fixed the problem for me. I just set resolution to 1024x768. I've played for several hours on Win7 with no crashes or stability issues.
The first half of the game is pretty fun. And I appreciate that this is a rare case of the game letting you play in both third and first person.
However, the game starts falling apart in the second half. Enemies get really bullet spongy and the game refuses to give you ammo outside of missles which become very outclassed in the later stages. And having doors suddenly close behind you to block off a retreat or let you scavange any left over ammo just adds to the frustration. This was probably to pad out its short length.
The game is also very unstable. Random frame rate drops and crashes, though infrequent, can happen at any time. The audio for voices also cuts out, making it impossible to follow what little story the game has.
Many games suffered during the transition from "2.5D" boomer shooters to full 3D, and while some games like quake 1 and 2 or half life made it out fine, this is not one of them and is best left forgotten.
I remember playing this on the Sega Dreamcast. It was one of my favorite games. Great atmosphere, at-the-time sense of scale, great weapons. The story is ok, chinese got takes over the world with robots/machinery, you save the day. Would love a remaste of this niche gem.
