You control the fate of Bathoryn, a doomed hero in a Gothic world, who seeks to liberate six cursed realms from six deadly overlords.
He must battle his way through this blighted land, packed with gruesome pixel art foes before ascending (or sometimes descending) into a stronghold, all the while defeating fiendish traps and vile monsters alike.
At the heart of every domain Bathoryn will confront a mighty foe - defeat it and his quest continues to its ultimate destiny. Fail, and you’ll die gruesomely – mauled by werewolves, disintegrated by floating monstrosities, squashed by great weights or torn apart by hidden blades. And you will fail…
There are 3 key areas to be mastered in order to vanquish Slain: Back from Hell.
- Learn to wield 3 deadly elemental weapons, each one exploiting weaknesses in different enemy types. Each has a different combo, timing and use. Mastering quick switching between weapons is the path to victory!
- Glean the placement and timings of enemies and booby traps.
- Generate, conserve and unleash your Mana wisely.
Accompanied by the heavy metal visuals is an even heavier metal soundtrack recorded by Curt Victor Bryant (formally of Celtic Frost).

WOW! this gme is brutal, (you will die alot!)
fun game, keeping you bussy for a few hours.
What you get with this game is a nice 90's hacking, slashing, bashing platform game, with some good atmosphere, kicks background music and good quality fun (if that is your cup of tea ofcourse).
There is however one issue, and perhaps its my pc and keyboard combination, but the keys for attacks in this game are very very precise on timing, and it seems sometimes imposible to get it right. And because of the brutal difficulty of the game you'll end up dead just because you missed that well importand blocking attack.
(and this happens A LOT, which makes the game more brutal and satanic then it should be).
anyway, if you like hurting and challenging yourself then give this game a try!
When Slain originally came out, I watched reviews and decided to skip the title. I was pleasantly surprised that people revisited this game after the devs made large changes to the combat system, and told the game is now great. Well, without experience of having played Slain before it was patched, I think the actual gameplay is still mediocre. A recollection to Barbarian (1989) was too dominant.
Slain convinced me to buy the game because:
- I like to listen to metal
- I like the opposite of cartoon-style
- I loved Castlevania (1986) in the old days
Slain: Back from Hell provided all. Good atmosphere and a slide scroll hacker.
Where it failed, and Castlevania succeeded, was variation in gameplay. Enemies may be somewhat resistant to fire or ice (involves swapping between cool weapons), and some may look like bone giants, horrifying spectres or a huge minotaur, but combat boils down to three styles: 1) Hack through lesser minions, 2) time a block and hit hard with a critical, or 3) hitting objects thrown at you and thereby sending it back. All three feel good, but you will have enough of it after finishing the game (took me roughly 6 hours).
So, what about this remarks about Barbarian? That game was the most frustrating game I played in 30 years of gaming. Okay, in Slain the controls are (after reworking the combat system) not as terrible as this old predecessor, but the level design and completely fixed monster spawns and behavior are.
Being able to finish the game revolves around two things: 1) Learn the timing of a block, and 2) learn the layout of the levels/monsters. I would prefer a more random (rogue-like) style.
Maybe the devs can work on another patch "Slain Into Heaven" that changes the fixed level design in a balanced randomized hell of monsters. Off course, along with more fighting styles that feel as good as the block-crits...
Started playing this game but, as seems, there is a bug once you get slain.
Essentially, you have to do alt-f4, quit the game and restart.
And since you die a lot...
Such a shame, this game should be removed by catalog until fixed.
Well, the fix is missing by 2 years now.
