No expansion, no function.
No alien crossfire? Fine, I just want to try the game. Crash every ten minutes? Alright, I'll check GOG support and its forums. Turns out I'm not the only one; turns out, there's no solution. Can't spell "no solution" without S-O-L.

Favorite strategy game of all time
There is no game that I would rather see a remake of than Alpha Centauri. Three iterations of the Civilizations franchise later and the game-play is still not up to par. Add to that an extremely compelling story perfectly mixing philosophy, politics, economics, and science in a great sci-fi setting. PLAY THIS GAME!
