The NES Game You've Always Wanted

This takes oldschool NES games and puts them together in a satisfying package with some modern design ideas, and that's just the base game: Shovel of Hope. The games are tough, but fun and rewarding, and you make it to the end by mastering the mechanics... and sometimes buying a few game-breaking upgrades, which usually is an option. Couple that with vibrant, colorful visuals and a KILLER soundtrack, and you've got a great game. And then, you get Plague of Shadows, which has you playing as the eponymous Plague Knight. It starts out overly difficult and awkward, but finish the first stage, buy the Float Burst, and the game gets a LOT better. Customizing your bombs (which are your main weapon) is super fun, and there are some stages that are actually easier as Plague Knight; just give it a little time. And THEN, you get Specter of Torment, which has you playing as the BEST character in redesigned stages with a wall-run and a context-sensitive air dash that is very satisfying to use. This one also takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, the mechanics are super satisfying. You also get King of Cards, which uses an air dash with a drill jump, and is also really satisfying to leap and twirl your way through the stages. Unfortunately, there's also a card game that's pretty unforgiving even early on; cards you win have an element of chance of even popping up, and tougher opponents can actually cheat. Maybe you like card stuff, and you'll enjoy it; I wasn't about to put myself through all that. On top of that, you get Shovel Knight Showdown, which is a Platform Fighter using Shovel Knight mechanics. I didn't care for this one either, because the win conditions are a little gimmicky, and the unlock conditions are asking way too much. All that said, even if there is a mode or two you don't like, what's here is excellent, and it's a great value for what you're getting; I highly recommend this to all fans of 2D Platformers.

Base game is fun

This game is fine if you play as the base character. The other knights you play as are clunky and result in a lot of stupid, cheap deaths.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

Great Platformer with expansions for almost all tastes. Multi Genre in use: Shovel Knight is your standard Metroidvania, Plague Knight lets you approach the game from a caster perspective, Specter lets you be Ninja Gaiden and King Knigth takes some elements from Wario and also it's a full blown card game. I wish I had this in physical. It's really great.

A modern love letter to games of old.

There's not much I can say about this game aside that it is absolutely fantastic. The action platformer is remiscent of the old days of Castlevania, Mega Man and the like but brought to the modern era. Tight controls, great pixelart visuals, genuinely satifying difficulty curve, insanely good soundtrack, it's all here. If you're a lover of action platformers this game is definitely worth picking up. The different Knights you can play as create a lot of different and varied gameplay as long as different perspectives on the story and world.

Jump n' Shovel!

To say this is one of the best platformers out there is an UNDERSTATEMENT. Shovel Knight is an extremely polished, good looking NES throwback. If you haven't played it, now is a great time to pick it up. Even at 25 dollars, this game is a steal. 3 completely different campaigns, with a fourth one coming out this year, secret bosses, puzzles, multiplayer, and an upcoming BATTLE MODE. You can't get any better than this for the price. And the different campaigns are basically separate games. EVERYTHING changes, it's insane. But let's talk about the game itself: It's good. Really good. Much better than... Most of the NES games it's trying to emulate. The gameplay is very similar to that of Megaman. Escept you jump and shovel instead of jump and shoot. You select a level, fight a boss, gain an ability, which you have to find scattered throughout the levels... Or buy in the town's shop should you fail to get them instage. rince and repeat. And that's in theory how the game works. The way you select where to go though, is more akin to Super Mario Bros 3, which keeps things from getting dull outside of the main game. What makes this game special though, is the great level design, soundtrack, fun mechanics, and great controls. Especially the controls. Bouncing off of enemies Duck Tales style can seem hard if you only watched a playthrough, but it's surprising how intuitive it felt. I have heard some people complain the game is hard, but trust me, it's nowhere near the difficulty of, say, Megaman games. Instead, the game let's you chose how hard you want it to be through upgrades and the genious checkpoint system, which let's you destroy checkpoints in exchange for a ton of cash. What a genius idea to balance profit and risk! You can make the game harder, but never unfair...er. Each time you die, you KNOW it's your fault and not the game's. There's not much one can say about this game that hasn't been said yet, you just need to buy it. Period.
