Classic platform game concept perfected

An awesome, colourful, funny, charismatic and original platforming game that takes the classic game design formula of the 8 bit era, perfects it, adds to it and presents it with a charming cast of characters. I was doubtful of it just from the promo materials but it was a nonstop blast once I got done with the first level. If you like platforming this game is worth every cent. Additional props to the devs for giving out the dlcs free with Treasure Trove, and for putting so much thought into the body swap mode. They really listen to the fans and work to fulfill their wishes!

Expectations Surpassed

Shovel Knight plays like a game from the NES with all of those games strengths and none of their weaknesses. Improvements include; stereo, widescreen, no sprite limit, fast-scrolling text that is skippable and no translation errors. I see many complaints that the level design is poor and I must disagree. Nothing about any of the levels feels off and none of the enemies or hazards feel cheap. Any time I have died it was my fault, because all obstacles are avoidable. If you are having trouble with the game, give it more time and practice before throwing it down. This is a step up from the deliberately obtuse level design of many NES games in an effort to sell Nintendo Power and artificially lengthen the game in order to discourage rentals (I'm looking at you The Legend of Zelda). The music and pixel art are spot-on. Shovel Knight takes inspiration from many NES games and is difficult to compare its gameplay to any one title. I can't really say anything bad about this game which is surprising because I expected to really not enjoy it. I've been following this game since it was announced years ago and avoided it until now because I was skeptical that it was just nostalgia bait and not actually a well designed game. I'm glad I finally own it as it is now one of my all-time favorites and well worth full price if you like these kinds of games.

Bought it ages ago, still recommend it

I bought this a while ago and essentially got the last campaign for free, but even for the price it is now, I can recommend it for the hours of awesome retro gaming this will bring you. What is Shovel Knight? Easy: Mega Man but with knights and fantasy stuff. Ok... is it hard? Well, only if you are a potato, tbh. It has its hard moments, but generally it's more like Mega Man X than Mega Man Zero, in terms of difficulty. Is it good? Very! Really? Yes! Why? Fluid controls, tons of spells and gadgets that will allow even casual gamers to tackle every enemy and level in their own way and develop their favourite strategy. How much gametime do I get out of this? For the campaigns only? Around 30 hrs, depending if you are godtier gamer or handicapped potato, more or less. Are the campaigns worth to be replayed? Yes, there is tons of different strats to go through each stage. What if I am done and don't want to replay the campaigns? Well, apart from you being clearly a worse person for that (/joke), there is a versus mode which is great fun. So yeah. Mega Man but with knights. Can't go wrong there.

Challenging family friendly fun!

If you like Mega Man, this game is right for you! It has fun characters and the gameplay is challenging, yet very enjoyable. This game includes a free DLC story called "Plague of Shadows" which is great, and in my opinion, it's even better on count of the better characters. It's worth the $14 for two stories packed with fun.

Amazing title!

So amazing I've purchased it twice (on Steam and here on GOG). I play my games via Wine on Linux and I've got maybe 50 hours across all of the campaigns with no issues I can remember. A lot of fun and as one user said said before me, the game is a lot more forgiving than many platformers in the genre. Definitely worth full price but if you're on the fence and it's on sale, pull the trigger because you won't regret it.
