Absolutely superb art, and brilliant soundtrack!
Sadly, I feel like the gameplay and narration are unpolished, leaving me slightly disappointed.
Also, the game feels shorter than it needed to be....
In any case, a memorable experience that was worth my money:]
The music and artstyle was fine, but it was pretty easy to look through the game-mechanics and this took a lot of the immersion away. The gameplay in the levels felt very static and scripted (I know, it's a scripted linear game, but there are other scripted linear games that make you better forget about the fact) - Most of the time I already knew were invisible trigger would come up before running through them.
This game has an unique and beautiful art style and it is a game that tries to learn us something, and I think succedes. It learns us to look to the nature diferently and to be amazed by every detail. Might feel a little like Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery, though the gameplay and style are obvious completely different. The story is also interesting. After playing the game I look at things a little different, I took something from the experience, and that is amazing, it's what good art does :)
Shelter is basically a linear corridor with 2 boring interactions - gather food and hide in bushes. From time to time you lose a child to a predator or to the elements and a shiver runs down your spine. And that's it. The disasters are interesting but the game is so slow that even these moments are boring. The game is one hour long. Can you believe that they really pulled this off? Yes, they did, and my friends and me bought this thing, just because we really wanted to believe that they did what they claim to do.
Everything Shelter tries to do, other games have done better. If you want to experience survival in the wilderness, you can try Don't Starve or The Long Dark. If you want to experience how cruel the world is, while you're protecting someone, you can try The Last Of Us, Ico, Amy... If you want to experience loss and grief, you can try Brothers.
tl;dr - A regrettable purchase.
TL;DR: Very pretty game with rather nice music. However, it is really REALLY short, especially for $10; it's less of a game and more of a cruelty-of-nature experience...and not even too much of that. Wait for a sale.
Pros:
*Pretty, especially for low-poly; nice style.
*Good music. Calm for the most part, but appropriately nerve-wracking for the eagle sections.
*Fun, at least the first time through.
Cons:
*It's linear with very little replayability, and it wasn't quite as fun the second time through; ended up trying to rush and...yeah.
*The ending originally made me think I'd missed something; when I got it the second time through, had to look up a guide and, yup, that was the ending. Appropriate, I guess? Not really satisfying though.
*REALLY short. I mean, I'd heard it was short, but I didn't know it was only five areas. Even with the night section where you're forced to slowly walk, it's still too short.
*$10 is too much for how short the game is.
I still recommend it since it's kind of neat, but really, wait for a sale. There isn't a whole lot of game here.
