Shadowgrounds is an epic sci-fi game that blends addictive oldshool gameplay and modern technology into one big, nasty alien-slaughtering carnage fest. The game is played from a classic top-down perspective that gives you a better view of the battlefield and allows you to use your gear to its full potential. As you progress through the game, new tactics become available as your arsenal is upgraded with even more destructive tools of mass destruction.
An impressive arsenal of upgradeable weapons allow you to kick alien ass in many different ways.
One of the best alien-shooter games with epic boss fights and an interactive environment!
Are you afraid of the dark? You should be, aliens in this game love dark places so use your flashlight wisely, the battery wont last forever!

I bought this game on its release and really enjoyed it:
The weapon's feeling, the arsenal, the lighting effects, everything is here for you to dive deeply into the adventure.
The scenario could have been better and I wish there were more kind of monsters and bosses,
Anyway, if you enjoyed Alien Breed, go buy this game and prepare for the journey!
Everything about this game is clumsy. I first bought it when it came out, and even then I remember thinking the controls were off and the game ugly. These passing years have not been kind either.
Would only buy for nostalgia purposes, i.e. if you want to replay this exact game or miss top-down shooters deesperately. The acting, the plot, the visuals and the mechanics have not stood the test of time - many were shoddy to begin with and have not been improved. When your basic shotgun is still bugged 10 years later and characters catch on corners, you know you did a poor job.
It is a fun game, but it does require a bit of modification to get most of it...
I almost deleted the game - the top-down perspective was at a too high angle, the resolution didn't support HD and the controls are annoying (especially the gamepad ones!). What changed my mind was a post on Steam about modifying the camera angle. After digging a bit, I also found how to change the resolution to FullHD. The gamepad controls were saved by AntiMicro (which is a lot better option than default gamepad in older games). Now the game properly configured, it was time to kick some alien ass, or whatever they have on the rear side...
PROS:
- Weapon variety - you have three different upgrades to every weapon, and the third one is alternative fire.
- Music and the sound effects are great.
- Graphics hold up well.
- Pistol and Lighting gun have unlimited ammo. :)
NEUTRAL:
- The same old overused alien invasion story, not bad at all, just overused. What is weird, is that a greasemonkey with a pistol is a much better at killing aliens than the trained soldiers with machine guns. The "plot twist"at the end is terrible though...
BAD:
- Camera and controls. If you don't configure them to your taste, YOU WILL HATE THIS GAME. Still haven't found the purpose of the "Camera button"...
- Enemy and NPC AI - the only job the NPCs in this game seem to have, is to get stuck in the terrain, and colliding with you, preventing dodging. The enemy AI suffers from the same IQ deficiency - a whole swarms can get stuck on a crate, or a patrolling enemy forget you exist.
Shadowgrounds plays ALOT like Alien Shooter 2: Reloaded. And that's a very good thing!
In what ways are Shadowgrounds and Alien Shooter 2: Reloaded similar? We're looking at the customizable weapon load-outs. We also have the large and diverse environments. Then, there's the noticable 'Aliens' flicks influence running through both of these games.
What are the differences between Shadowgrounds and Alien Shooter 2: Reloaded, you may ask? Shadowgrounds has a lone protagonist, as opposed to Alien Shooter 2's selection of protagonists. Also, while the weapons of Shadowgrounds aren't as numerous they are far more upgradable. Not to mention, Shadowgrounds uses polygonal graphics and a rotatable camera, as opposed to Alien Shooter 2's 2D sprites and static isometric environments. These differences give Shadowgrounds its own identity and justify its shelf space in your games library.
Quite solid shooter. Story isn't great but good enough. Some minor bugs here and there but nothing impossible to get over with. Sadly controller can't be configured the way I wanted so had to play with mouse and keyboard. Saving only between missions makes it a bit frustrating as one mission takes about an hour. Guns are diverse and upgrading system makes them more interesting.
