Fun with the Wang
Funny, action packed and immensely entertaining. This game has pulled off the nearly impossible feat of creating a truly satisfying sword fighting technique in a first person game. Forget Skyrim! If you want Awesome swordplay, this is where is at!

Painkiller... with a Sword
RECOMMENDATION: Multiple playthroughs + Survival Mode, 4 solid stars I've fallen in love with the swordplay. Slicing through hordes have never felt so satisfying, with body parts flying everywhere and bonuses that will keep you going out for more. Double-tapping a directional button + primary fire will unleash skills (there's just three, though), that either stabs, gives you a ranged attack or downright slices enemies around you, their heads flying off. It gives you a nice incentive to dig in to the front line, and not just kite. I can assure you that you won't be playing this for the story. No, sir, the story's uninspired and stale, with plot twists getting incredibly predictable. BUT - you can count on it's incredible writing. The banter between Lo Wang and his companion is hilarious, and even Lo Wang by his lonesome can garner chuckles. Cutscene FMVs are well done, drawn and animated with incredible art. All in all, it's one incredibly-polished game if you can forgive it's faults. It does remind me of Painkiller a lot - whole lot of action, checkpoints and the occasional huge boss, with very little depth; but what is depth if you're given an excuse to eviscerate demons by the dozens, and look so good doing so? Definitely grab this, and with a Survival Mode thrown in after the patch, you'll be playing this for a long time. Also, you'll dig the last chapter. Trust me on this.

Better than the original
I never really played the original shadow warrior but i put a lot of time into Duke Nukem 3D, which has the same engine This game however is a totally different ball game, its either a shooter or slash em up depending how you play (or both) the shooting is the standard fayre for modern FPS, there is a good selection of guns. However the slash em up is where its the sharpest (see what i did there?) as you play more and more you unlock more abilities and sword moves and soon youre a master baddass kitanna wielder. the level design is excellent, the graphics are gorgeous, but become a little repetative in the long levels, the enemies however is where it shines too. each new enemy is introduced as a little boss where you learn techniques to defeat them, before the go on to star as regular mooks. Plus the Demon companion Hoji is funny as shit! you need to get this game for his snide comments and observational comedy

Well done reboot
SW does a far a better job than most FPS reboots. It looks like a modern FPS and has modern additions such as an upgrade system, a sprint/evade mechanic, and various special powers; but it still largely plays like the classics. Huge weapon arsenal, big (though linear) levels with plenty of secrets, and constant waves of enemies to fight through. The swordplay in particular is quite fun, and is entirely viable as a primary weapon throughout the game. They have of course not forgotten to keep the humour as Lo Wang packs plenty of great one-liners, and some fun banter with Hoji. There's a story. Kind of. Like the first game it's not really important. +Excellent graphics +Old-school FPS combat meshed with some modern additions and great swordplay +Upgrade system gives some customization (you won't get enough points to upgrade everything) +Decently long, will take most ~15 hours to finish +Big levels with lots of secrets hidden around +Funny one-liners and dialogue -Some of the bigger enemies take a long time to kill and later levels throw many at once; the pace of the game really starts to drag towards the end when combined with... -Too easy; fully upgrading your sword skills drops the difficulty several notches particularly due to the 'drain HP on attack' skill -The power of the sword completely overshadows the guns; you'll still need them against the major bosses you can't reach with melee and enemies that self-destruct but that's about it Overall the pros greatly outweigh the cons and mostly enjoyed playing through it. I'd rate it 4/5.
