The Best Serious Sam
A while ago I started playing through all Serious Sam games on Serious (only skipping SS2) ending with this one. First of all, it is incomparable to something like Doom (2016/Eternal). Sure they are both "modern old-school" shooters, but SS had always had a completely different playstyle being more about quantity than being tactical about it. What I like about this game is that it gets into the action right away, it's ramps up quicker than SS3. The graphics are a lot more vivid than any of the other games. I like what they did with the characters, and they were also reasonably useful on the second level with enemies set to x11. I thought the dialogue between the characters was good in the way that it was so bad, the humor being a little stupid and nonsensical. There is lot of pun making and them jokingly trying to come up with good one-liners. You are not supposed to be laughing all the way throughout the game, but some jokes got a good laugh out of me at least. Point is, none of the other games are this funny. The gunplay is the best out of the series, the shotgun and double barrel visually have different shooting patterns, likewise with the minigun. Each weapon now leaves trails of where the bullets are flying. It just makes the shooting feel more impactful and it is easier to discern which weapon does what. On comparing normal to serious difficulty, I did feel ike I actually needed the seperate gun dual wielding perk to be able to survive some area's properly. I am not sure about the melee perk side, it feels kind of useless against the big hordes which is why I have actually never used it. Also this game in fact has the most enemies in any of the games ever (especially on x11). And also the biggest levels, which you then realize doesn't say much so just stop comparing them, and the most over the top shooting of any serious sam game ever. I though the use of the legion system was pretty cool, but I am not sure what other people expected.
