Lights blur. The crowd whizzes past. Your helmet rattles against the roll bar and the competition switches into overdrive. Tears stream from your eyes and the race moves into extreme speed. Tears of sweat. The same stuff that's seeping off your palms and onto the steering wheel. Get a grip. You're sliding into a turn at 200 miles per hour and centrifugal force will only carry you so far.

This is velocity-driven, pedal-to-the-metal arcade racing. Strapped into a personally chosen made-for-the-Autobahn racing machine, you'll scream to redefine fast in this winding 3D ride of pure fun.
  • Great, addictive, arcade-style gameplay
  • Driving mechanics so unrealistic they’ll make you wish you could powerslide like that in real life!
  • If you didn’t have a Pentium processor back in 1995, now is your chance to finally play this game!

Arcade racing at its best

Let's get one thing out of the way: If you look for realism, look somewhere else. And I don't mean just the graphics, but also any kind of physics. You won't find them here. Screamer was the PC's response to Ridge Racer and it manages to capture much of the charm early RR titles had. The graphics: The graphics were beautiful at the time and among the best you could get for PC. And the bright and lively style still works to a certain extend. The environments, while not overly detailed still provide a solid experience and the car models work beautifully. Neat little effects like the reflecting windows of your car or video sequences playing on screens beside the track provide a little liveliness that many other racers from that era lack. The downside is that this game cannot make use of any kind of 3D acceleration and in order to pull off the impressive amount of detail for the environments and cars, the viewing distance had to be limited. In other words: you get the dreaded pop-up effect quite often. Also, anything beyond 640x400 is totally out of the question. However, these limitations are purely visual: The tracks have been designed in a way that doesn't punish you for the game's shortcomings. If you have played this or similar games during that era and are able to look back with fond memories, then you will enjoy the graphics, otherwise the resolution and limited amount of detail might be a dealbreaker. Sound The game includes a very nice MIDI and CDAudio (enhanced versions of the MIDI sounds) soundtrack. It's really hard to describe, but sufficient to say that it has a bit of an 80s sound to it. Instead of trying to describe it, I'll just tell you to look for it on YouTube. Besides that there's the usual arcade commentator and quite frankly, he can and will get on your nerves... but can you imagine an arcade racer without it? The Gameplay Race around a track. Do it as fast as possible. Simple, right? Well, no. Not in Screamer. In the absence of any kind of physics, you don't just have to steer to get around corners, you have to break and slide through them. Time your breaking perfectly and you'll slide through the corners beautifully. Time it a little bit wrong and you'll smash into the nearest wall. Likewise, crashing into one of your opponents will usually result in the one who's on the front racing away as if nothing had happened, while the one at the back comes almost to a complete stop. In other words: don't collide with them. It all comes down to timing your moves perfectly and the game can be pretty unforgiving, however after the initial irritation, you'll come to love it. It simply captures the simple arcade style perfectly. The Conclusion is very, very difficult. Basically, if you like modern racing games like DIRT or Burnout, then this won't do you any good. However, if you grew grew up with Arcade machines like Ridge Racer or Cruisin* World you'll be reminded of all the good times you had playing them. My view is the later one and that's why I'll give it a 4/5.

A great, nostalgic racer

In these modern days racing games basically must have incredible graphics, nice damage modeling, and a hefty amount of content. And while I admit I do like some of the new racing games such as GRID and Burnout, sometimes I just want to play an old fashioned arcade racer. The ones you were rushing to the checkpoint and get a time extension right before the clock hits "00". Screamer delivers this arcade racer perfectly, and anyone who wants a quick pick up and play racer or a blast from the past in arcade racers, consider giving Screamer a shot.

A Timeless Racer

Screamer is a fine exemplar of the early age of 3D racing games. Like most games of that era it lacks the massive amount of content games nowadays have, but manages to make up for it, offering high quality content that will entertain you for a long time. A completely arcade experience, it features simple but immensely fun game mechanics. Great music and effective cool looking menus complete the package, you won’t find yourself lost at any time here and a good race is always just a few clicks away from you. There are 10 cars in the game. While each two cars are actually the same with different transmission type and paint job, they all handle differently. Defined by three basic characteristics, some are more prone to power slide easily while bearing a high acceleration and low top speed, others act quite the opposite. Of course, there’s the jack of all trades car that balances all the aspects. You can change the view from your car at any time, including one view that allows you to see the dashboard. A secret eleventh car completes the pack, but it will be a long time before you can put your hands on it. You start with only 3 tracks available with 3 others to unlock. Each track is unique in its setting and feel, even though two of them actually share the same theme, Palm Town. While they vary greatly in course complexity, the visuals are amazing with lots of details to observe and appreciate. Sometimes you get that feeling that modern games with all their realism and over abused HDR lightning just lost the magic of creativity somewhere along the way. Since the game is so old, predating the 3D Graphic Cards era, its graphics are fairly outdated. The car models are low poly, the draw distance is pretty short, many details on the scenarios are actually simple sprites and the highest resolution you can get is very low. But as I said, the artistic direction is so powerful, that it won’t feel too ugly or unpleasant at any time. Sound-wise, the game is a bag of mixed feelings. The musical score is great, if just a bit repetitive. The sound effects on the other side are just enough to get the job done, some being downright annoying like the skidding sound. And there’s the commentator. He is cheesy and can occasionally get on your nerves, but at the same time, he just feels very right to this game. There are a handful of game modes. The Normal game, a simple quick race with any of the cars and tracks you already unlocked. The Championship mode puts you through a series of leagues, racing around all tracks with growing difficulty and unlocking new tracks, inverse tracks and the Bullet car as you progress. There are a few special modes, basically time attacks with different conditions to each one. But they add little to the already great longevity of the game. And of course, you can duel with your friends over a network race at any time. The racing model may feel a bit outdated, but it’s a classic easy to learn, hard to master scheme. Spins and overturns are pre-programmed animations that always repeat when you do something foolish enough; enjoyable if a bit unfair at times: any collision caused loss of speed (specially overturns) will generally get you a lot of positions behind, but you’ll usually get them back within a few miles of good driving. The only really bad parts here are the collisions between cars. If you’re behind, you’ll be tossed instantly into one of the track sides; if you’re side to side with them, generally nothing will happen and sometimes the AI cars even slide through the side of you car in a strange effect. Overall, Screamer is a fantastic timeless game. While fairly old and with flaws that stand out a bit more nowadays, it managed to age better than some of its contemporaries both visually and gameplay wise. A must have if you’re a fan of racing classics.

Not nearly as good as Screamer 2

Exactly what title says. They are very similar from screenshots but the essence of the game is quite different. Screamer 2 was the game i played the first and i just bought Screamer 1 not long ago. And quite frankly i don't like it. Let me explain why. It lacks the insane drifting through corners. And because of that, Screamer 1 just doesn't have the charm of the Screamer 2. The same reason why i totally love the NFS Hot Pursuit 2010. It has the very same car handling as Screamer 2. It's insane, it's ridiculous and it's incredibly fun. For me personally, Screamer 2 is still one of the best racing games ever made and i'm really sad that it's still not available on GOG. Because just words simply cannot describe how good the game really is. I still have the original CD which i have just started playing using DOSBOX (really difficult to setup, but it's well worth it). If Screamer 2 ever comes to GOG, i'll buy it just for the sake of running it easier on modern systems to enjoy it some more. And if Screamer 2 ever comes to GOG, make sure you'll buy it as well. I can assure everyone that you won't be disappointed. I'm giving Screamer 1 three starts just because it's the very reason why we even got Screamer 2. Without Screamer 1 there would be no Screamer 2. And that would make me a very sad panda. So i'm glad that they made this game.
