After the space faring antics of Saints Row IV, many fans asked what we could do next… the answer? Shoot The Devil in the face. Play as either Johnny Gat or Kinzie Kensington as you tear apart Hell in a quest to save the leader of the Saints’ soul. Historical icons, old friends, older enemies, a talking gun, a full length musical number, and a whole lot of other shenanigans all await you in the open world standalone expansion playground that is Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell.
Play as Johnny Gat or Kinzie Kensington – For the first time ever, play as the fan favorites Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington, alone or in 2-player online co-op.
An Open World from Hell – Wage war against the Prince of Darkness through-out the 5 unique districts of hell any way you want: rescue allies, pick a fight with nightmarish Arch-Dukes, rob Satan’s soul processing plants… dozens of options await you in an all new city unlike any that’s been seen in Saints Row before.
New Supernatural Powers –The acclaimed super powers of Saints Row 4 are back with a hellish twist - Soar through the air on fallen angel’s wings, summon devilish imps to attack your foes, and surround yourself in a divine aura that forces all to worship you.
Outrageous Weapons – Put the 7 deadly sins to good use with an arsenal of underworld themed arms: fire exploding frogs at enemies, shoot swarms of locusts, and even deal destruction from afterlife’s most comfortable (and lethal) armchair.
Kill Dex – We promise you can do it this time. Pinky swear.
After my time with the last two games in the set, this outing was just disappointing. Yeah there was definitely fun to be had, and I found myself enjoying a little extra time after the story was finished when I was showing it off for Extra Life, but it just pales in comparison to what we have had so far. I can honestly say it's descent in it's own right, but that is not much compliment for a follow-up to the highs that were the last two titles. If you need more Saints Row, it's worth playing, but you've already seen it at it's best. It's all down hill from here
The only Saints Row thing about this game is the returning characters (of which there are two). They also made Kinzie sound really suggestive when getting hurt, despite sounding perfectly humane in the previous games - love it or hate it.
Overall, this game feels like Bethesda touching the Fallout series: when playing through the main story, the gameplay feels half-baked, like it was made from a Unity game template, the self-aware cutscenes aren't really enough to justify the action part of the experience.
The 5 stars is because of the game's unsung hero: world design.
I have clocked about 200 hours (more than SR4!) just holding the walk button and admiring the attention to detail in the world. The denizens of hell all look the same, representing stifled diversity & self expression. Some rest on benches, others sleep on bare mattressess on the soot-filled rooftops. Poverty? We're gonna need a new definition...
Out of nowhere, a bloke will express a fervor of frustration. Another will literally chased by flesh-eating insects, suffering. And sometimes, they get zapped by lighting, just because.
And sometimes, you may even see someone be on the city payphone for ages, spending all of their pennies trying to connect to the outside world - with no response.
And that's not even talking about the buildings yet. The slums are my favourite area, each window of the gigantic buildings representing prolonged torment of hell. Partially burnt clothes, heaps of TV recievers on rooftops existing merely as a place of rest from the exploitative society.
All of this paints the most cohesive "show, don't tell" writing I've ever seen in an open world. Asset reuse doesn't necessarily mean bad.
Still, I shoot the demons sometimes, just for kicks. I found the game most fun with no main missions completed - it opens up just the right amount of open-world activities without ruining the game's atmosphere.
Though, I had to disable the free roam nagging through a mod...
