Update (13 November 2024)
Applied the lost Wacky Worlds Patch, fixing several scenery items and entry points in various scenarios
RCT2 and the original RCT are all-time classic games, and RCT2 is only further enhanced by the now-stellar reimplementation OpenRCT2, which, among other things, has reimplemented the game's park save format to drastically raise object limits and allow for much greater control over the look of your parks.
Both games still have large and active communities to this day.
But way better! This game has the same feel of the original, but does way more. More coasters, more parks, and ESPECIALLY the dedicated coaster/scenario builder.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 has proven itself to be one of the best classic games out there. It is also one of the very few games who improve upon its predecessor without destroying it. It's actually almost the same, just better.
If you don't own it, please do your self a favor and pick it up this instant.
This game is just as awesome now as it was when it first came out two decades ago. The default GOG installation runs good even on Windows 10. However, there are limitation that can be a problem. Fortunately, when you run the game with the OpenRCT2 engine, it runs much better with modern features & resolutions and integrating RCT1 & RCT2 together in a single engine with all original features and scenario's intact, including the expansion packs!
Whether you want to play the game from the default GOG installation or use the OpenRCT2 engine, you will enjoy this classic game!
Buy with confidence!
This game plays, works and looks exactly as RCT1 but with some improvements.
There are more rides and attractions to use in game, a scenario and landscape editor, a track editor to design, test and save coasters.
The game is fun and building coasters is enough various and challenging to give satisfaction, anyway the game isnt so perfect.
Sadly, as the game is basically an expansion or re-edit of the first one, it carries in also the issues present in the old title.
The main issue is related to AI pathfinding, the employees when given a specific zone to care can be stuck in some circumstances so its required to manually pick up them and drop in the right path or redesign some footpath/intere zones, especially the AI seems to find hard interacting correctly with footpaths not at ground level, which restrict a bit the idea of developing some exoctic builds avoiding intricate footpath designs.
Another issue always related to AI pathfind happens to the park customers, which in some cases will start looping in a corner of the park or a little zone like they had no exit or they were blocked by something, when it happens the only way to solve it usually is to understand where the AI wants to go and erase all / create footpath in that direction, which is a lot annoying and sometimes just ruins a great park design.
There are some other minor issues, still present but not very important.
A word about the scenario editor, it doesnt have a random map generation option and it starts with a plain empty terrain, so to build up a big and cool scenario its needed at least to work on it some hours, if not days.
Luckily its possible to load in pre-existent maps and also savegames, modify them and save as new scenarios.
Also the scenario options are not many, as winning and start conditions, surely the editor should have been done better.
At the end its a great concept, a good and fun game like RCT1 but those issues keeps this title and his predecessor a couple of steps behind the masterpiece rank.
Still a good game anyway.
